We spent two nights at Costa after booking online and emailing them to confirm. So, they were clearly expecting us, but it’s fair to say they weren’t at all prepared. There was no sign of management - other people have mentioned a guy called Richard, but he wasn’t there. We had to quite literally ask for everything. The bed was made, there were two towels left out and a kettle (which I had to clean as there were dead insects and a spider’s web inside it), but that was about it. No cups, tea/coffee, a spoon, water, glasses, toiletries (there was just a dirty bar of soap in the bathroom), toilet paper.... We never got a spoon or any tea, just sugary 2 and 3-in-1 coffee. We didn’t get any toilet paper either - just a few tissues. One thing they did provide was a sachet of insect lotion - the sand flies after sunset are a nightmare. The lotion helped but didn’t eradicate the problem. Don’t even think about going barefoot! Our ‘villa’ was built on sand, but there’s nowhere to wash your feet and no floor mats to keep the sand off the polished wooden floor. We had to use the towels they gave us and ask for more, and we had to ask them to brush the floor as no broom was provided. The power went off both nights we were there, but there was no other light source in the room and they didn’t come with anything to help us. To manage people’s expectations, they need to be realistic about how they describe the place. The ‘deluxe bungalows’ were just tents on a raised platform. There’s no bathroom - just a couple of toilet/shower points. Our ‘villa’ was pretty, but it was just a beachfront bungalow built in a traditional style. All the power points are at the back so bizarrely there are three floor and table lights in a line but nothing else. They say the rooms also have a seating area, a sofa bed and a desk. This really isn’t true! There’s a bed in the middle, a coffee table, a side table and a very small wardrobe. Otherwise it’s bare. There’s a hammock for one person, but nowhere to sit - inside or outside - other than the step. The bathroom is down a set of stairs, and half indoor/half outdoor. It’s badly thought out, as the floor is part concrete tiles, part pebbles and sand, and the cold water shower is at the very end. So your feet are wet, dirty and full of sand before you’ve even got back into the room! Outside of the room, they say they have bicycles (not true), a shared lounge (not true), and a bar (there isn’t one). There are no sun loungers on the beach, just a few cushions and some small umbrellas. We arrived at lunchtime and they told us the restaurant was open, but, when we went to eat, the cook (?) told she only had frozen fish which she could fry or grill and serve with boiled rice and sambal. We asked about the other meals - breakfast was included in the price and the advertising says they offer a la carte or Asian dishes, and the nearest alternative place for dinner was a bakso place half an hour away. But they couldn’t offer anything else for those meals. We were also told they had no drinks other than coffee. As we’d be eating there six times (2 x lunch, 2 x dinner, 2 x breakfast), this wasn’t really what we wanted to hear. The cook said there wasn’t much she could do, as the lady in charge was asleep (the top of the range ‘deluxe suite’ I might add!) When she appeared, she just put it back into us and asked what else we wanted! How could we give a reasonable/realistic answer to that?! I asked to see their menu so we could get an idea of what might be possible. When the menu appeared, we basically gave them our food order for every meal, so the sleepy person in charge could go shopping. We asked about the breakfast menu but we told we could only have rice or noodles. When she returned, she gave us some corn (as a peace offering?) but then told us some of the items weren’t available. I find it difficult to believe that bananas are in such short supply! After that she was gone. She even took the following day off - probably to hide until we’d left! The food was basic. The grilled fish was quite good, but the fried fish and chicken we had was so dry - cooked to within an inch of its life. And a teaspoon of sambal between two of us. Luckily we’d asked for some veggies to brighten it up. And for some beers to take our minds off it! Breakfast was extremely sad. A bowl of rice with a fried egg on top on morning, a bowl of instant noodles the next. No fruit, no veggies. 5k food in a 1.5k per night resort. And when we got the bill, it turns out that they charged extra for the water they gave us (we didn’t ask for it) and the coffee we had with breakfast! The invoicing was the only real thing they got right. This is an infuriating place. My travel friend is Indonesian so there wasn’t even a language or cultural barrier that anything could be blamed on. The beach is wonderful - great sunrises, sunsets, great for walking and exploring. It could be fantastic. But it really isn’t. I understand that things are really difficult in these pandemic times. I might be wrong, but it seems they opened shortly before the virus appeared, and before they’d even finished all the work. And now the owner has disappeared and left it to fester in the hands of a woman who prefers to sleep. Any work was done by the cook and her son. It would be better to close until they can finish the work and reopen properly. Or lower their prices and describe the place realistically. It’s wrong to swindle people out of money by not offering what you promise. 1.5 million a night is a joke price for what they offer, plucked out of thin air. And apparently that’s less than the normal rate!
