Summary: room okay but unacceptable staff which made us regret spending our new year’s here. We chose this hotel because of its location (outside the city in a bit of green) and because of its vegetarian restaurant. Being vegetarian ourselves, we were really looking forward to it. Spoiler alert: food was okay but not as expected and restaurant was mostly closed. They drive you around the complex for free in golf carts and we also got dropped off at the airport for free. We booked Qilinshu Hotel but realized upon arrival that Warm Tree Valley and Qilinshu appear to be the same which is fine because we initially wanted to book with warm tree anyways but couldn’t as it was fully booked on ctrip. It’s situated in a large holiday villa/apartment complex outside of Gasa, in the middle of nowhere which is nice in general if you want to escape the city trouble. You are really dependent on the hotel facilities (restaurant) and Didis or taxis if you want to go somewhere and don’t have your own car like us. But it’s manageable. The complex is under heavy construction which does not directly impact the hotel though. The area is okay for bicycling and hiking through remote villages but the hikes include a lot of dirt roads and trucks throwing dust at you and the hotel does not offer rental bikes nor are there any in the area. Also: no scooters available. Important: there are no stores and only 2 restaurants in the area. #1 is the vegetarian hotel restaurant which appears to be mostly closed. #2 is the restaurant of another hotel in the complex. Food there is okay but few veggy options. The hotel staff was also not able to provide recommendations on restaurants, Spa or other facilities in the area. Getting to the hotel is a bit confusing as the indicated address on trip is not correct. You have to navigate to Warm tree valley resort. The pool area does not belong to the hotel. The facilities are nice. The few sunbathing chairs were enough for this time of year. Unfortunately, there is no service (no drinks, even though there is a bar, no towels, etc), even though the facilities would easily allow for some very good service. Gym is also ok. Generally speaking, the room and the patio were okay. The first “villa” we were allocated to was nice and large, but it was on the main road of the complex which was frequented by construction vehicles (trucks) every few minutes until late into the night. Additionally, the downstairs area was open space and didn’t have a door to the outside, only curtains. This felt a bit weird, considering you’re in the main road. We asked for a change after an inspection. Second “villa” was located right next to reception, restaurant and pool which is better in our case. Distances within hotel area are rather large. Room was oldish and also smelled a bit old. It didn’t seem like the room was freshly prepared for new guests (room E18b). Also, the outside area, I.e. area in front of entrance and the villa’s garden area were not very well maintained and weren’t cleaned before or during the stay. The outside area had a little patio overlooking the area which was quite nice for yoga. The bedroom (upstairs) was okay with a small balcony. Downstairs area was old and smelled old. The second bed in the downstairs bedroom wasn’t made - maybe still bedding from previous guests? There is a kitchen with cupboards and a fridge as well as a one plate induction burner. But shelves are empty, so no kitchen utensils (pans, dishes, cutlery). Be aware of that if you plan to do your own cooking. Drains in bathrooms smelled bad, hotel staff covered smell when cleaning room, but smell returned after few hours. Portable heater was provided on request as A/C didn’t turn “warm”. unacceptable humiliating behavior of the staff On the night of our arrival we walked to the restaurant and were told that it was closed as the hotel owner had a private gathering. After a short while, however, we were warmly invited to join, which was amazing. The food was excellent. The staff ensured us that the restaurant would be open the next night. Following night: same thing. Restaurant closed, but we were allowed to have dinner regardless. We were promised by the reception staff that for the following night the restaurant would definitely be open as it was New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Eve we were hoping for a relaxing night in the vegetarian restaurant and, due to the confirmation of the hotel staff, didn’t plan to go outside to find another restaurant to eat at. Arriving at the restaurant at 6:30pm we were casually told that the chef had been send home as the following day was a public holiday. We were slightly irritated and angry due to the misinformation. The on-duty staff (the only one in the hotel that spoke English) did her best to help us and even went to a store somewhere to get us some food. After a nightly ordeal wishing we were back home in shanghai, we travelled to the restaurant of the other hotel on the complex. After a short discussion and explanation of the situation, the VillaBlossom hotel restaurant manager managed to organize a veggie dinner for us. We ended up having a very nice evening. The last night of our stay we actually managed to get diner at Warm tree valley restaurant and it was good. The negative experience was highlighted by the departure day where we were guaranteed at noon that the restaurant would be open for lunch so that we could have a nice lunch before our flight back home. When we showed up an hour later, of course it was closed. We were slowly getting agitated and our complaints were greeted with an arrogant smile and laughter because the staff (Mr. Li) thought it was funny. The laughing continued when being confronted with the unprofessional attitude. This felt humiliating. Conclusion: considering the very high price we paid (450€ for 4 nights) and the experience we had, we can say that this hotel really left a bad taste to our holidays in Xishuangbanna. On numerous occasions we felt that we were not appreciated and would have preferred to finish our vacation early and fly home. The English speaking lady from the front desk as well as the hotel manager were always helpful and very friendly, but a large part of the of the staff made us regret coming here. I would not recommend this hotel to foreign tourists as the standards are very low considering the price.…
