After a truly amazing trip throughout Ethiopia last March, I flew down to Hargeysa, capital of the breakaway and still unrecognised Republic of Somaliland. I stayed at the Deero Hotel, an excellent budget hotel right in the city centre. I chose this hotel thanks to good reviews on tripadvisor! It's a popular hotel with Somalilander expats visiting from all over the world. I met natives who lived in Australia, Canada, the U.S, northern Europe and especially Britain. Breakfast is served in the rooftop restaurant, and you can have fried meat, bread and/or delicious tomato, chilli and onion omelettes, with tea or coffee included in the room price. The restaurant staff are all women, and they do a great job! Most of them speak good English. The satellite channels are excellent, plenty of English, Arabic, Turkish and local stations and fast wifi.

I used the services of a local travel agent, Khalid at SomalilandTravel and Tours. He speaks perfect English, and organised my tours to Berbera and the incredible caves at Laas Gheel, as well as a city tour of Hargeysa. I highly recommend him to other travellers who wish to have a reasonably priced few days in this interesting country.

Khalid organised my stay at the Deero Hotel, which at $45 per night for a double as single with ensuite, satellite T.V and excellent wifi is a bargain in this city which can be expensive for accommodation due to the large numbers of U.N consultants, aid workers and journalists on expense accounts!

Visitors to this largely unexplored country must have an armed security guard when travelling outside Hargeysa, and Khalid's choice was a tired but very friendly and funny guy called Fawaq.

On my day trip to see the ancient cave art at Laas Gheel, I was collected early morning by Khalid in his 4x4 with Fawaq literally riding shotgun. Although Laas Gheel is only about 50km from Hargeysa, the road is appalling, full of potholes and lots of trucks coming the opposite direction from Somaliland's port at Berbera. Despite all the juddering and bumping around, Fawaq and I managed to doze quite well on the slow drive which took about 2 hours, until we arrived at the entrance to the track leading to the caves. There we picked up a local scout, also armed with a Kalashnikov, and the 4 of us set out on a 30 minute, very bumpy ride for 3 km. There is a small stone building at the entrance to Laas Gheel, like an interpretive centre, with photos of the cave paintings and the French archaeologists who came to investigate the caves.Other than a Somali nomad with his flock of goats, we were the only visitors. There is a rocky staircase up to the caves, and seeing the paintings was a surreal experience. Apart from the beautiful coral colours of the rock, the paintings of cows, bulls, camels, antelopes and humans in ochre and white are stunning. The views across the lunar landscape of this remote region are incredible, and I was truly in my element, being a bit of a cave woman! Some of the paintings of humans are cut off at the waist, and it is thought that these represented women, the complete figures are men, and there are some paintings of men worshipping bulls or drinking milk from the cows' udders! Other scenes depict hunting, but always the unfortunate women don't have an upper torso! Were they considered half of the men? Lots more interpretation and exploration is needed to explain these wonderful, unique art galleries which are thought to date from between 5,000 to 10,000BC. The paintings are in pristine condition due to the dry climate and really deserve to be included as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. However due to the instability across the whole country, the powers that be prefer to leave this remarkable place alone.

The next day Khalid, Fawaq and I did the long drive to Berbera, Somaliland's port on the Red Sea. It took 3 hours and 2 flat tyres, but we made it! Khalid dropped me at the Deero Hotel right on the beach, and went off with Fawaq to repair his tyre in town. After extensive travelling all over Ethiopia, I had not been near the sea for nearly 3 weeks, and this was bliss! After a light lunch of 'fuul' beans and chapati, and an exquisite fresh orange juice,I changed into my shorts and tee shirt, covered with my sarong and lay on the almost deserted beach for 2 hours, even had a quick swim! Some friendly Somali women who were brewing tea under a tree, called out "sister, welcome, come talk to us", they didn't mind my beach attire and uncovered hair! 2 of them had lived in Bristol of all places, and spoke perfect English. Other than these nice ladies, and a couple of teenage lads who wanted to practice their English, I was left undisturbed to relax and read under the tropical sun.

I felt totally safe and at ease in this hospitable and relaxed enclave of Somaliland, while the rest of the country is tearing itself apart. There is almost zero crime, in fact the money changers bazaar, right outside the bank, is left unattended at night and nobody would dream of stealing anything. There is a drive to register the population for census and electoral voting - no easy task in a country with a largely nomadic population, and due to the extensive Somali diaspora, there is a great sense of both local and Western issues. Unlike other parts of Africa, there is law and order, a functioning government, hospitals, schools and tolerance for the traditional nomadic and clan based system. I loved my few days as a solo female visitor here, and urge other adventurous gypsies to check this interesting corner on the Horn of Africa out.

i am an experienced world traveler of matrure years, traveling alone or with friends, picky but not overly so, who does much advance research for trips, and am therefore generally happy with my hotel choices.
on arrival in town, i drove wayy out to the lux ambassador hotel, and it seemed to be a fortress designed for ngo and gov't/military types whose way is being paid and want to stay in a place in which they will be able to be totally unaware of being in hargeysa. the man-soor is too far out as well. the oriental is just across the street from a wailing mullah at an unbelievable decible level. so it has to be the deero.
you must stay downtown here in hargeysa to be in the middle of things and to walk about at leisure.
the deero has a modest but comfy and homey lobby one flight up. so helpful and so friendly. charming "big mo" presides in the afternoons. he got me a 12 hour car/driver/police escort tour in a 4x4 to las geel/berbera/sheik for $230 that the oriental wanted $289 for. computer available at the front desk, wifi. restaurant on top floor has panoramic terrace, turkish soap operas on the tv, and excellent fish fingers and beans - sounded awful but was so good i had it two nights. the oriental just down the street has a more varied menu but not much of it was available the night i tried the place... The deero rooms are spotless and modern and good sized. the hotel is friendly and in the middle of things, and yet a real oasis from it all.
SEE:
sit under the mig sipping tea and talk to the locals.
las geel is fabulous and a MUST.
old town berbera is other worldy and weird but wonderful - eat in the al xagaat restaurant by the sea fighting off the cats and crows while you dine al fresco - all part of being in somaliland.
the camel market in hargeysa is FABULOUS.
there is no danger at all in somaliland. i got a bus from jigjiga to the border, and (on the third try) a shared taxi that actually left the border town, tog wajaale, and drove me into hargeysa. i flew out to djibouti on jalloo airlines which couldn't have been more professional.
i was really glad i did this (crazy) somaliland thing !!
enjoy !!
