We, too, look forward to your return! I arrived in Xizhou last night after an extended trip through Xinjiang and the -Stans. I was researching potential projects along the Silk Road that could be developed in a similar way to the Centre. I have been a longtime scholar of the Silk Road and have dreamed of developing a Silk Road collection of retreats that would replicate the learning and hospitality model of our Yunnan hotels. I looked at many existing structures, some dating back to the Song and Ming dynasties, all of them constructed of mud and wood. I stayed in four- and five-star boutique hotels that, while clean and generic, had very little character and limited services. These hotels provided only a room, usually designed in the currently in-fashion, Ikea-like, minimalist style. I never felt any connection with the tangible and intangible cultures that existed outside the hotels. We at The Linden Centre are inspired by culture, by a respect for what has existed in-situ and not what currently is in fashion along coastal China. This means that we greatly limit our potential target market, losing many guests to the chic-chic Mediterranean- and Japanese-inspired designs that feel the need to adorn Chinese culture with outside aesthetic influences, altering the so-called traditional to recreate a more palatable past for the wealthy visitors. We believe that our model will endure and thrive as travelers become increasingly sophisticated and their tastes recognize localization over generic hospitality and design. Guests like yourself can see through the superficial facades that exist at many other locations, out-of-place physical fabrications kindled with little to no local soul. Thank you for staying with us.

A philosophy of environmental ethics forms the foundation of the Linden Centre. We have taken concepts from 20th-century philosophers like Heidegger and applied them not only to the natural riches of our region but also the cultural and social resources. Heidegger's concept of sorge- which some translate as 'to care for'- asks of individuals throughout our experience of Da-sein (being) to incorporate values such as stewardship of our surroundings. By pursuing such values, we, too, will see that our being is a constant evolution that can only be enhanced by understanding our place in the world. We value the environmental, social and cultural because, through them, we can better steward the evolution of our Da-sein; we can better understand our being-as-such. We are inspired by past and present thinkers and try to balance their wisdom with the need to thrive in one of the most capitalist societies around- China. Come philosophize with us anytime! Thank you. Brian

We love to receive compliments about our team! Most people don't know how unique it is to find so many passionate, professional and bilingual young men and women in one location. Our local team has worked so hard to learn English in order to eagerly share their feelings about their home- Xizhou. We regularly hear from guests that this is one of the only places in all of China where they can speak so freely with the team. We have designed our space to encourage such interaction, dedicating our grand first courtyard to common space meant to promote discussions, game playing- ping pong, pool, board games and mahjong, sharing of tea and coffee. We boldly have foregone the insertion of more guestrooms in order to create space for our team and the local village to interact freely with our guests. Ask yourself when you next visit similar hotels- how much common space did they create? How many local staff members do they have? How many gems like Matt are confidently pursuing their futures in rural Yunnan? Such details are what makes the Centre truly stand apart from other destinations in China. Thank you.

Thank you for staying with us! For the past month, our small village has been alive with international students and professors studying topics as diverse as filmmaking, environmental studies, architecture and place, and language. Our three Xizhou sites are full, and everyday scholars and professionals are sharing their expertise with said students, the community, and our guests. This week we have already hosted a screening of ten documentaries made by our film students, talks by visiting Fulbright scholars on sustainable coffee growing in Yunnan and efforts to address environmental challenges of Lake Dian and Erhai, and presentations by The Nature Conservancy, Middlebury College, and Sidwell Friends. The latter two schools (each with over twenty students respectively) are daily sharing their research with our team and community. Last night we even convinced one of our guests, an economics professor from the University of Pittsburgh, to share his findings on the increasing transparency of China's government. For the past decade, we have attempted to create an international platform for intellectual exchange: a rural retreat that delivers compelling and vigorous programming while immersing guests in a vibrant and welcoming social environment. Our partner schools, professors, and professionals choose to come to Xizhou because we offer something that the coastal universities and programs can not- intellectual bounteousness plus the charm of a timeless China. We are proud of the accolades that have been given to our hotels. They continue to thrive and will always remain the foundation of our social entrepreneurial model. However, we are equally proud of the learning environments that we have created here in conjunction with our curious and passionate partner schools. It takes courage to venture beyond the comfort zones of Beijing, Shanghai, and other Chinese cities. We want to thank our partners and guests whose prescience and fortitude have enabled us to expand and diversify the intellectual environment here in China's Himalayan foothills.

Thank you for your special words. As you remember, during your stay, I delivered talks at a rural development conference. After the conference, I was approached by dozens of government and private attendees all earnestly armed with questions such as: How do they ensure that their respective local communities can benefit from the inflow of outside investment? How do they preserve their communities' essence while injecting modernity? These questions constantly challenge my team, especially as we take on larger community development projects throughout Yunnan. I summarized my responses to those questions below. First, the Centre was inspired by our reverence for the local and our desire to create indigenous solutions to local problems. We developed our hotels to serve as counterbalances to the often incongruous design- and luxury-driven tourism models that are ubiquitous throughout China. Throughout our thirty years in China, we have observed an increasingly egregious pursuit of satiating the traveller who was inspired by the size of their rooms and bathtubs or by proximity to bars and shopping streets. We wanted to prove to the governments and Chinese people that another model can coexist: a model that respects the region's cultural and social resources and ensures that tourism's benefits will accrue to the local communities. We approach each potential project by analyzing and researching each communities' hopes and needs. We limit our expansion options by avoiding established tourism markets where our model would have little to no social impact. Instead, we look at communities that are experimenting with or completely new to tourism and need assistance and leadership. We want future partners (and we are partners with every community and their respective governments) to know that our project's intangibles are more important than our hardware. We invest more time and energy in researching and developing the trust of our surrounding communities than we do in sourcing gimmick-driven designs. Second, we believe that the villagers should benefit most from each project. With the explosion of tourism in China in the nineties, businessmen left the coast to replicate the fashionable hotels and 'old towns' common in areas around their cities. Short-term gain was the goal and little attention was paid to the environmental, social and cultural damage caused by their projects. Why should they care? The average return on investment took less than 2-3 years and by that time cookie-cutter simulacrum had already inundated their markets. The Linden Centre targets existing and important structures in each community. By carefully restoring and repurposing these buildings, cultural pride is instilled in the locals. Said restoration costs more, takes more time, and can never replicate the superficial luxury of China's five-star hotels. However, our willingness to take on the challenges of restoration demonstrates a commitment to the village and their traditions. They are proud that we are not there to alter their culture to appeal to an urban elite. Additionally, our model inspires the locals to become the soul of each of our sites. We average 3-4 local workers per guestroom and base our activities and source our materials in the village. Our neighbours are the foundation of our projects and coexist with us, not separate from us. We succeed only if they succeed, and success is measured in social and not just in monetary terms. Last week's inquisitive attendees reminded me of a question I received recently from one of the students from our Middlebury School of the Environment program. She asked what can America learn from China. I answered the question by stating that America must rekindle a sense of humility; we must realize that we do not have all the answers. Narcissism and arrogance should not be the only traits of a world power. China's hunger to inquire and learn about different models, to be exposed to outside ideas, to question the effectiveness of the current norms is inspiring. This country is often criticized for lacking imagination and vision. The Western media perpetuates that judgement from the confines of their gated Beijing enclaves and favorite Starbucks. My experiences in rural China suggest otherwise. Much of China is yearning to be exposed to different paradigms. It behooves America to adopt China's self-effacing openness and rekindle a willingness to learn from beyond our borders.

What airport do guests usually travel to/from? I.e., "Airport Transportation" that is listed under "HOTEL AMENITIES" from what airport? Thank you!
You can fly into Dali Airport - DLU is the code. Take care when you book it and don't get confused by the Dalian airport which is close to Korea and far away from Dali. A driver can be arranged to pick you up.

What is the email address for The Linden Centre in Wuxi? Is the renovation complete? Are they taking guests?
No # San Diego. Candy from Linden Centre (XiZhou) has responded; " The WuXi project ceased, with Jeanee + Brian developing two additional sites in XiZhou. BaoChengFu (their 3rd site, opening Jan 2015). Expanding a diverse list of activities already on offer...to include culinary + ceramic workshops. " hope this helps !
