Stayed two nights (booked by tour company). Upon arrival the place looks reasonably nice, however the major flaws are immediately obvious, and one can only wonder what the people who designed this place were thinking.
In other camps tented rooms are usually single and spread out for obvious reasons. Not here. My room shared the same tent and the same very squeaky wooden floor with another room, separated only by a canvas wall - a sure recipe for trouble: it's practically like having your neighbors in your room, you can even hear them using the toilet, not to mention the floor squeaking and creaking at every step.
The room was very dark, so dark that I couldn't even see the content of my suitcase. The weak light bulb hanging from the ceiling was essentially useless. The bathroom was comparatively much better lit. Upon request, they gave me a portable lantern which didn't make much difference. There were no hooks, hangers or even a towel bar anywhere. Upon arrival, the towels were on the bed. Unclear where you are supposed to put them afterwards: there is no place other than the floor. Comfortable bed and pillows. No electric kettle or even a glass or cup. There was a power strip on one side of the bed.
The water in the shower was cold the first night and barely lukewarm the second; water pressure was very low. The toilet leaked from the base with a trickle of water on the bathroom floor.
They shut off the water between 22:00 and 05:00 every night, but no one bothered mention that upon arrival. I found out when I couldn't wash my hands after using the toilet (fortunately I had already showered).
Wifi was extremely slow and sporadic, even in the restaurant. There was hardly any wifi in the room.
The tents have no locks. The staff state that the camp is very safe, but not everyone is comfortable leaving their belongings unattended.
Meals are reasonably good with generous portions.
For US 300 a night (full board), it sure doesn't cut it.

I strongly recommend this lodging for all guests of Serengeti National Park. Our stay for two nights was absolutely amazing, food was good, well arranged and proffesional staff. I would highly suggest it to anyone planning a visit to Serengeti National Park.

We stayed at the Kamwene Tented Camp for two nights as a family of 4, at the end of August 2023. Overall the camp was great, and I’d definitely recommend it to friends looking for somewhere to stay within the Serengeti National Park (disclaimer: we’ve not stayed at any other such camp so have no idea how this camp compares to others).
- Location: central enough to make it easy to get to and from, and isolated enough to make you feel you are alone in the park.
- Tents: the tents are spread out, far enough to not disturb one another. Each one was large and comfortable, with a carpeted floor. The bed was very comfortable, with a nice warm duvet. One side of the tent has openings (with an insect net), with covers that can either be closed for privacy, or left open to be able to see the wildlife outside. Great to be able to leave the covers open and see the Serengeti wildlife from the bed!
- Bathroom: the bathrooms in the tent were fine, if basic. Large bathroom area, with separate shower and separate toilet. The was no shortage of hot water for the shower.
- Food: Great chef! We had breakfasts and dinners at the camp. All of the food without exception was very good.
- Bar: there is a communal tent with a bar, with a selection of wines from the Serengeti as well as from South Africa. In the evening the staff built a campfire, and it was great to sit around it with a glass of wine and a bowl of popcorn, and watch the sun go down.
- Staff: Ali and Stephen were great hosts, and really looked after us.
My only regret is that we didn’t stay an extra night. If we’d done that we would have gone for an early morning game drive, then just enjoyed a day at the camp, sitting in front of the tent and watching the wildlife from there.
If you are looking for a comfortable camp, with good food and very friendly hosts then I would absolutely recommend Kamwene.
The photos on Tripadvisor do not do the camp justice!
