-RESERVATIONS WARNING-- **What-to-do when your reservation magically disappears** DAY 1: When we arrived with the kids after a 5-hour drive, we were told that our "verified" reservation was somehow magically not there. Recreation.gov showed it, but it was "not on their paper list." Someone else was in our spot we were told. After 3 hours of them telling us "we are sorry, the campground is full," as us not leaving to drive home 5 hours in the dark... they "found us a site for 3 days." DAY 2: The next morning the campground hosts came to tell us, that "whoops" our site was reserved and we pack up all our stuff and move. Bummer. The campground host said she would move us a new site for the remaining 2 nights. We started moving down to that site... when last minute she asked us to move to a different site, to "help them settle a dispute between neighbors." They put us next to the problem folks. We packed up all our gear and drove to the "new, new" site. DAY 3: The 3rd morning the camp manager came over to tell us that "whoops" again, again, our spot was reserved and we have to move a 3rd time! She offered us the site across the road. We started packing up... and guess what!? She came back 20 minutes later... "whoops x 4!" it was reserved!! BUT... we could go back to our original site 59, because now it was empty and magically now it showed up on their paper list. As a fun note: I checked on 59 (our original reservation) every day, and it was empty all weekend!! I mentioned this to them and they insisted it was reserved. ** By this point we were so fed up with the absolute ineptitude, confusion and complete lack of organization by the campground hosts that we packed up a day early and drove home. CONCLUSION: I have been camping my whole life, all over the US. I'm also a professional guide as well. NOT ONCE in my 25 years of booking sites through REC.gov have I ever had a problem like this. It was a total mess. I know the hosts were doing their best to remedy the situation however is was done very poorly. Every day a new person would promise us several nights and then the next person on duty would kick us out. Every day they just passed us on to the next person on duty, who would then verify that what we have been promised the day before was a lie. We were like the can the just kept getting kicked down the road. I really hope this gets remedied. Because planning your family vacation months ahead of time, only to show up to this confusion is completely unacceptable and avoidable.

Spent 5 days at the Princess Campground and had an amazing time. The campsite we had (#17) was perfect for a 35' RV and had shade coverage all day. Gigantic pine trees surrounded us with their magnificent beauty. We were given a friendly greeting and escorted to our campsite when we arrived. Though you dry camp at this location, there are plenty of vaulted toilets near each site. The campground was very quiet each evening and we were allowed to have a small campfire in the firepit. The campgournd is located in a great location only 8 miles from the General Grant tree and Hume Lake. Hume Lake is absolutely beautiful and you can rent a boat, longboards and kayaks there at a very reasonable price. Also there is gas available at the general store. The next nearest gas station is 25 miles away. Two other great places to visit are the waterfalls at Rolling River and of course Sequoia National Park that is about 28 miles away. The road there is under construction so be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes to get through. One other place of interest we experienced was Stump Meadow which has a beautiful trail you can walk on while you're looking at the skyscraper size sequoias. All in all, just a wonderful place to visit especially with children. We took two of our grandchildren and they loved every minute.

We stayed in campsite #88. Neither of the photos on the Reserve America or Campsite Photos websites did the campsite justice, as our space and the adjacent spaces were far closer together than indicated in the pictures, and far less spacious than other campsites I have selected in California state park campgrounds. Quiet hours were not enforced, and people partied, hooted, hollered, and laughed well into the wee hours of the night- bring earplugs. The camp hosts are friendly enough, but even with all their diligence and early morning rounds, the pit toilets stank to high heaven. By the end of our trip you could smell them a good fifteen feet before you walked in. I gleaned that gathering firewood from felled trees is acceptable. We bought a couple small bundles of wood from the camp host at about $8 a bundle. We priced bundles of wood at other locations from between $8-$10.99 for a box of wood at Lodgepole. The closest showers are quite a drive away. Stony Creek Lodge is a 44 minute drive, and they have showers open to the public, $5 for 10 minutes. You can also buy gas at Stony Creek Lodge for $4 a gallon. The next closest shower facility is an hour away at the Lodgepole Market, open from 7am-9pm, $1 gets you 3 minutes of water. Lodgepole also has a laundry facility, they have change machines to give you quarters both outside and in the laundromat, which are right next to each other, you just have to walk through the market to access them.

First, a shout-out for the camp hosts, who let me store my camper for a couple hours after checkout at 11. This allowed us to tour the park without having to pull a camper (a deal breaker when trying to find parking spaces.) Campsites are fairly spacious and interspaced with Sequoias and sequoia stumps. Multiple water taps around the loops, but unfortunately, they charge $10 for using the dump station (the only national park that I have seen do this) Princess is pretty far east in the park and probably your best bet if you don't have an advanced reservation.
