Nice area kf the forest. Typical natl park campground, sites are close together and heavily used. Campground has flush toilets and showrrs nearby. Nearby are giant redwoods, caves, small creeks and swimming holes. Easy to get to, no bad roads or cliffhanging one laners.
I got on the computer on July 4th looking for last-minute camping in late July/early August. I was able to snag four consecutive nights on two different sites at the lower Stoney Creek site, but when we showed up we looked at all the available "walk-up" sites and swapped for a fantastic site up at the very top of the upper campgrounds. We ended up staying five nights and had a great time. Pros: Easy access to a creek with wonderful pools for adults to cool off and for children to play. Very clean restrooms- we stayed at the upper site without flush toilets, and they were always clean and did not smell at all. Easy access to ice, water, and firewood at a store two minutes away by car. Cons: Some sites like ours in the upper campground get baked in the sun during the day. You get more shade on the lower site, but you are also closer to the road and other campsites down there. Depends on your comfort- we liked the privacy of the upper sites- our kids often had practically the entire mountain and creek to themselves. But our neighbor called it a bit "lonely" up there, especially at night. One key takeaway for getting a site at Stoney Creek- don't go by the signs to tell you what is available. Talk to the onsite manager- they know the gossip about who is leaving and when, and how you could snag a good site. At times they would have the "Campground Full" sign up at the road, but there was a great open site inside waiting for the first person to claim it.…
This has been my favorite campground in Sequoia for over 2 decades now. It is not part of the big lodges and the back side hike to the rocky valley where 2 creeks meet is among the best...especially the natural rock slide into swim hole. The small store a short walk away with showers is also perfect.
