The palace is truly amazing. It is in a small town in the middle of nowhere and you would definitely not expect something like that to be there.
You can visit the palace all year round. They offer a guided tour as well as an individual visit. The fee of 6.50 Euro for an adult was quite cheap.
At the moment the east (or west?) wing is closed for renovation.
You can take photos for free. There is a cloak room for your bags/backpacks (you would need a 1 or 2 Euro coin for the locker which you get back when leaving).
The park behind the palace is huge and you can walk there for free (the ticket is just for inside the palace). At the moment the green grass is rather brown as there wasn't much rain this summer. Nevertheless a walk along the shady park ways is truly amazing.

This Baroque castle offers one of the best castle experiences in Germany. The surrounding area, with the small houses built by the duke for the people and a large church, a square and small cascades, is already nice, open and easy to walk. Behind the castle there is a large garden. The entrance fee is very modest. Inside, take a self guided tour through the chambers with the excellent restorations of the papier mache, the wall textiles and so on, which recreate the original grandeur. The restorations are done several years ago and there is a nice film explaining the process and the craftmanship of those involved. There is large cafe on the ground floor. Parking is free three minutes walking from the building (not in front). Surprisingly, in contrast to nearby Schwerin castle, there are almost no tourists. Even the highway leading to this town is empty. You can spend many hours relaxing and enjoying here. Don't miss.

We stopped here on our way from Hamburg to Berlin. We are glad we did. It is a well preserved Palace which is accessible for the first 2 floors, 4.50 euro for Seniors.
Has a lovely coffee shop in the back of the ground floor. Outside this is the entrance to the gardens and grounds.
Very peaceful and tranquil. Your could spend hours just strolling around them.
Worth a visit.

You can easily visit this castle when you're traveling by train from Berlin to the North (Schwerin and further). From the railway station it is a 20 minutes walk to the castle, and you'll walk to part of the park. Railway tickets in Germany usually allow for a stop during your journey, so we visited Ludwigslust at no extra cost. Just make sure you catch your next train to continue your journey!

This is a nice palace in Ludwigslust town. It is smaller than other palaces in Germany/Austria, and this one still needs more restoration work.

There are also few tourists. Mostly Europeans. We were the only Asians around. It's not one of the touristy places, which makes the visit better. There are audio guides in English, don't worry.

I particularly love the town, though. It was very quiet on that Sunday afternoon in April. Reminds me of my hometown, though a lot quieter and with better-looking houses. Seems like a nice place to retire. I imagined if I lived there, every Sunday, I can go to the palace and hang out in the cafe.

Visiting the childhood town of a friend was a delight. How could we leave town and drive back to Hamburg without visiting the palace. It was a joyful wandering......there is a room with fabulous paintings ......and quietly appreciated without the hoardes of tourists.
There has been much renovation to this place.....and watching the video about that was insightful.

We came across Ludwigslust quite by accident while meandering through Germany. We stopped for lunch and walked over to the palace. It is a beautiful late baroque chateau set in a fantastic garden. The chateau and grounds are open to visitors. Walking in the grounds is a calming experience that can be recommended.

Ludwiglust Palace or Castle is a beautiful baroque palace in the north of Germany. The palace itself is beautiful but the history is even more interesting. Duke Friedrich built it from 1772 to 1776 but first built the Church which faces the palace in 1765-1770. He also built housing for the people who worked on the estate. The church is amazing with an incredible 3D altar painting that is 14 meters high. It is painted on about 1000 square tiles made of papiermachi. I have been in many beautiful cathedrals but this church took my breath away and had such a sense of peace. The other thing I found spectacular was the gardens with old trees and waterways and lovely peaceful places to stop or walk or even picnic. After looking around there is also a lovely cafe behind the palace where great food and coffee is available. This was one of my favourite places.

Ludwigslust, almost out of the world is a wonderful castle.
The Schlosscafee is well designed and it combines the old hunting areas of the monarchy with modern architecture.
The service is friendly and the cake from the bakery just delicious. The tour is worth to visit the castle.
