“A Memorable Experience ”

Terrific drive on the Transfagarasan in September. We drove on a Wednesday leaving Sibiu around 8:30. Traffic on the road was light -- no issues on this mid-week drive -- weather was excellent. Drove a smaller rental car -- Kia Clio, no issues handling any of the road. Great picture spot was near the end of the drive through the valley -- about 3 pull off spots that offered great picture options. We saw five brown bears after finishing the drive through the canyon -- so on the way down to Curtea de Arges. You'd come around a corner and see a car or two stopped or driving slow -- bears were close to the rode. Obviously, we stayed in the car and got our pictures driving by slowly. A fun experience -- traveling mid-week was a good choice.

I want to start by saying that I’m very afraid of heights, but this experience was wonderful! Everyone is so relaxed and friendly! I would definitely recommend this to my foreigner friends! We started from Cartisoara and went to Curtea de Arges. Also saw 8 bears while near Vidraru’s lake.

Definitely worth the drive, the views are spectacular and the sense of being stunning. And the amazement of where people park to narrow the road even further 😂

Amazing views, terrible road surface

This road does absolutely have some very nice views but the roads are absolutely some of the worst that i have witnessed in my life, if you plan on visiting transfagarasan i recommend it if you have a car that you would like to test to see if it is resistent to bad roads, or a large suv. It’s such a shame that nothing is Done to improve one of Romanias main tourist attractions, i would say that even in communist romania the road probably would’ve been in better shape

In conclusion, if you want to see some magnificent views but also destroy your car this is the perfect road

Such a wonderful road Top Gear was right one of the most beautiful roads in the world.We even got to see a bear as we got there very early in the morning

Amazing road

In my opinion this the most beautiful road în the world. You can see here bears, squarels and other nice wild animals. Me and my friend were vey impressed and I am sure we will return to visit it.

Snow in April? Wow

Wonderful place for nature lovers and snow lovers. Coming from Florida I didn't expect to find snow this late in Romania so it was a very pleasant surprise.

One of the best road trips I ever had in my life

We passed by here coming from Bucharest going to Sibiu and. It's summer so the mountain air is fresh and greens all over. Beautiful forest and breathtaking sceneries. Near the top there are little falls beside the road. At the top there's Lake Balea and, small church and open markets for tourist. There are still snow covered on the mountains during that time. The Romanians are so lucky to have this sight and this forest and mountains. We even saw 2 bears beside the road. I would love to come back here and stay in one of the hotels in the area and take the cable car going up the mountains. The sceneries are so refreshing to my eyes.

Driving a very spectacular road ...

The Transfagarasan Highway - a mountain road built by the Romanian military in the 70's , for military purposes , today is 1 of the most spectacular roads in the world.
It is not opened year round, so mind the opening and closing dates ... from the area of Sibiu - you can drive all year round to the Balea Waterfall Cabin - their is the cable car station and you can take the 15 minutes ride to the lake Balea ... spectacular in every season.
As you drive mind the bears , this year I've encountered several on the Arges side of the road ... Don't feed them , don't stop , don't try to pet them , avoid and ignore ... they are wild animals , the y belong to the forests near the road and should not be begging on the side of the road ... we the people pushed them there with our ignorance .... but that is a different story ...
A few highlights on this spectacular road - as I was driving from Arges to Sibiu that will be the order:
- Curtea de Arges Monastery - at the beginning of the Transfagarasan Highway
- Vidraru Dam and Lake
- Capra Waterfall
- Balea Tunnel and Balea Lake.
- Balea Waterfall .- should you have the time
Overall , spectacular scenery ("Top Gear" and the Stig drove this road ) , spectacular nature - and even if this ride was covered on thick clouds and the pics I took are not as bright as on a sunny day - it is still worth it... go check it out for yourself , in 2023 - now as I write this review the road is already closed for traffic.

We drove this route on 13th October. If travelling from Curtea De Arges north, the landscape is in two contrasting halves. The first half until you arrive at the long tunnel is forested with deep valleys. Our drive in mid-October saw beautiful autumn colours here and with plenty of areas to stop, there are good photo opportunities all along the route. Of the two halves, we think the first half is the most picturesque although as a drive the second half is perhaps a little more dramatic. The weather was cloudy but dry but amazingly after emerging on the other side of the tunnel we had climbed higher and it was a completely different day, noticeably colder, raining hard and by the time we reached Balea Lake there was plenty of snow on the mountain side. Unfortunately, the weather was not conducive to exploring the lake area. The landscape on this side is much more rugged. The descent is spectacular with multiple hairpin bends. Good idea to take a photo of the road descent from the top point. There are a couple of roadside parking areas which allow this.
Road conditions generally were fine, much of the route has been fairly recently resurfaced, so overall, the driving experience was smooth, there were just a few areas when the surface was quite rough and needed care around some potholes. Mid-October a good time to visit as the roads were very quiet.
