Fabulous unique old church. Whilst the cathedral especially the crypt is well worth a visit, this church is the star attraction although the view over Lake Bolsena from the Belvedere runs it close. It’s well worth a detour despite its unprepossessing exterior.

go inside and discover a church with two stories ... beautiful wall paintings and full of details witty details (invest a few euro to activate the lighting) ; burial place of the so-called german bishop story that originated the fame of the (rather uncomplicated) est! est! est! wine

I was used to spend summer holiday in Montefiascone so I know it since I was young but every time I am in front of it, I feel someting good inside me.
Enter and look at the bulding, the painting, the columns and capitals. Look for the legend of Defuk and his servant Martino but above all, sit down and feel the sense of peace, the fresh, the history and much more.....

The Basilica of San Flaviano is an unknown jewel of Romanesque architecture with many frescoes still remaining dating to the 11th century. Known to be the place where a german bishop, visiting the incoronation of Henry V Holy roman emeperor, stopped by in the area and after tasting a local wine exclaimed: est! est! est! , meaning he had found the perfect wine

The Church is not publicized and it is not in the historical center of Montefiascone but it is absolutely fantastic. Full of frescoes. It is dark when you enter but paying 1 euro you have 15 minutes of light. It takes a minute to warm up he lamps.

We were cycling from Bagnoregio to Viterbo via Montefiascone and stopped at San Flaviano as it was on our way. We weren't expecting much but we were pleased we did stop by as the frescoes are impressive.

A couple of tips:
- The church is very dark inside and it's difficult to see the frescos but we found there is a lightbox on the front left hand corner that for one Euro makes all of the lights come on.
- In the front right corner there is a placard of the Legend of Defuk and a tomb. The description of the legend raised a chuckle from us both. You can read the legend on the attached photo or you can be surprised when you arrive

If you find yourself near Montefiascone, San Flaviano is worth visiting

We stopped here the first time just because it looked interesting as we were driving by on our way to somewhere else. Little did we know what the interior offered and we were stunned. There's definitely too much to fully comprehend, being ignorant of the past glories. The second time it was our goal and we had read up on its history, but still I'm sure there are things we missed even if we dedicated an entire morning to looking at the affrescos. I have a special interest in the "capitelli" and here they are fascinating! Next time I'd like to go with a professional guide.

Don't be put off by the exterior which looks like bits of 4 different churches - the interior is very simple and beautifully painted. A mediaeval gem

As often with old churches it can be a refuge from the siring sun at midday but once inside the holiness of the place takes over you,

The headline picture is of the cathedral, not S Flaviano but there are several good images contributed by reviewers. Built between the 11c and 15c this is really 2 churches one on top of the other, built into the hillside on the Via Francigena. Some lovely frescoes from the 14c and 15c which have thankfully not been over-restored, and well preserved romanesque details. And for those who want to se it, the tomb of Dubuk of 'Est Est Est!' fame
