A piece of Transilvanian history
Sep 2020 • Pasangan
This castle was recently opened to visit (2014) and it is worth paying it a visit if you are around Brancovenesti. Unfortunately, the castle has been badly damaged after communist nationalization (1949) and robberies afterwards, so the interior bears the scar of such unfortunate period. The current owners (heirs of Baron János Kemény) have started reconstruction works and they are even searching to redeem the furniture and belongings that were stolen from the castle since 1949. So far, very few items were identified and repurchased from the surrounding villages.

Fabulous

Welcomed right at the entrance, under a picturesque stone balcony on consoles, by an offspring of the noble Hungarian family, owners for over 3 centuries, we were already ready for jumping on a journey back in time; already ready as the host charmed us from the very first minutes with his wit and fun - I mean stories replete as much with historical facts as with details of the locals' everyday life.
A fort-like stone structure with 4 towers, raised on the ruins of a Roman site centuries ago on commission from Hungarian royals and changing hands from one reigning family to another, in mid 17th century it was donated to John Kemeny and his descendants.Having survived the adversities of much of the 20th century, it was, at last, returned about 70 years ago, to its original de jure owners, the Kemeny family. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, bringing back to life an outstanding piece of the Transylvanian Renaissance style, we can now take a jump back to mediaeval times, imagining what daily life, in such a place, might have looked like.
Last but not least, it's worth remembering that starting the last decades of the 19th century, the castle was a major venue of the Helikon academic societ whose members greatly contributed to he promotion of education and culture among ordinary people.
