Be sure to do the canyon hike from Cabanaconde and spend the night down here at Sangalle. there are mules available for the trek back out of the canyon the next day which I would recommend since you'll be sore after the hike down.

The oasis is beautiful to be sure but it is expensive, touristy and just plain overrated. The hike into Colca Canyon is difficult and this place just wasn't worth the effort of the hike. Especially when considering you have to hike back out.

We got there on our own by hiking from Cabanaconde, without tour. It is an established green area in the middle of nowhere. It is a great challenging hike to get there. It offers various resorts with swimmingpool (which is very nice after an early hike in the heat of the sun). Highly recommendable to hike to, but again, a tour is not necessary to get around.

Nice little settlement close to Cabanaconde.
The most well-known part of the Colca Canyon, Sangalle is stuffed with hostels and hotels - we used Paradise Lodge. Place is really beautiful, but other things so so. There was a lot of tourist, swimming was closed, food was quite good but cold shower in the dark... Fortunately is wasn't expensive.
The way to Oasis was difficult and heavy with a lot of dust and stones.

An very beautiful trekking area and unlike anywhere else in Peru. We spent two days trekking this area without a guide or tour, which is totally unnecessary in this canyon. The trails couldn’t be easier to follow and the whole area is perfect for fit hikers but beginner trekkers. Don’t be fooled though, the steep drop into the canyon and painful return climb to the rim are harder than most hikes, and reminiscent of those found in the Grand Canyon.
We did the long classic route which descends to Llahuar and loops to San Juan before climbing back up to Cabanaconde. This is typically done over three days but we got to Llahuar by 10:00 on day one so competed the second days hike as well. That day was around 20+ kilometers and tough but rewarding. The next morning, we climbed from San Juan to the rim, which was quite a bit longer and tougher than expected. We had decided to skip San Galle which is on most trek itineraries as it is the most touristy of the villages in the canyon.
We stayed at Colibri Lodge for our night inside, which was one of the nicer guesthouse we found in South America. No reservation, just got lucky with a walk in and they had availability for us.
The only downside of trekking here are the ridiculously limited bus options. Unless you are coming from or going to Arequipa, there really aren’t any public buses available. There are a handful of tourist buses, but they all make lame stops at expensive restaurants, viewpoints, etc and cost $50-65 USD for Puno or Cusco. We didn’t want to go all the way back to Arequipa since we were headed to Cusco, and managed to find a public bus option to get there without backtracking. It included a few steps and a little adventure, but cost just 50 soles and was actually pretty easy. And let’s face it, you wouldn’t be trekking in Peru if you didn’t like adventure.
If you want specific info on the trekking routes and distances, how to do this without a guide, or most importantly all of the transport options for accessing the canyon and then getting to places other than Arequipa, search our name, Career Break Adventures and Colca Canyon or something of that nature. Have fun and enjoy the trek!

The most well-known part of the Colca Canyon, Sangalle is stuffed with hostels and hotels, all with spring-fed swimming pools. I would recommend Llahuar over here however.

Went on a 2-day trek with my husband to this amazing oasis with an amazing guide, Rely Ojeda (FB). The place is worth the hours of walking. Our guide was very informative and kept our group entertained the whole time. We ended up bonding with everyone in the group. Highly recommend Rely for this trek!

I did 2 day hike to Colca Canyon.
The place is literally stunning but what makes the tour very special was my guide Rely Ojeda.
Simply the best.
The trek was a bit though for me, especially the second day, but Rely supported me in any possible way to finish the hike.
It was just perfect!!!

I did a 3 day hike with the tour guide Rely Ojeda and some friends a few years ago. The scenery was stunning and the two overnight stays were beautiful and tranquil. Two of us, myself included struggled a bit with the altitude on the first day and Rely was super helpful in making sure we were ok. I can't recommend this hike enough, it was probably more memorable than the Inca trail I did to Machu Picchu. It was amazing.

I was looking for a relaxed atmosphere where to stay for the night after walking for +25km in the Colca Canyon. Arrived at San Galle and I could hear loud dance music (Western) and the area is packed with hotels with pools. Prices are very expensive. I could not find a way how to get to the river. Was not impressed, but could be because I prefer nature and quiet. I am sure others enjoyed it. I camped under a tree for the night.
