For us the boat trip was the main motivation for a trip from Trieste to Muggia. As for the Muggia, it takes 1,5 hour to visit the main sights (cathedral, San Francis church, castle, main square in front of the cathedral). If you visit the 2 museums as well, it may take half a day and if you go to the beach/or the archeological park, then Muggia may fill a day trip. It is nice to leave noisy and busy Trieste for a while and enjoy the silence of this smaller town. Unfortunately one cannot enter the castle, only loom at it from the outside.

The Serenissima held for centuries the Dalmatian coast against the Habsburg, and Muggia was their northermost redoubt, just across from Trieste - which was never under Venice. A simple Veneitian fishing and military harbour - and good fish restaurants.

Took the little ferry from Trieste over to Muggia one afternoon and had a nice time just wandering the streets and sitting having a drink in the square near the church. We visited in October and it was quite sleepy and quiet, but we didn't really mind. It might be a bit busier in the summer months. But the ferry trip there and back is nice too, and we got lucky with a great sunset on the way back over to Trieste.

Muggia is a nice little fishing town. It happens to be at one end of the Alpe Adria trail, with most people finishing the trail here.

It is a pleasant place, but when we arrived, on a Friday afternoon after hiking the trail, the tourist information office was shut and we struggled to find a restaurant serving food before 7pm.
The people are nice and friendly and there are some nice places to sit and look out to sea.

I cannot understand why some people are so negative about Muggia. Maybe they expect it to be some sort of jazzed up town like Monte Carlo. But Muggia isn't like that. It's just a little relaxed fishing port, 20 minutes by boat across the Bay from Trieste; and it makes a delightful day-trip from that city. Four of us took the trip to Muggia in October 2019. We caught the ferry (which departs hourly from Trieste's Bersaglieri Pier ... costs 8 euros per person return - get your tickets on the ferry). We cast off at 9.15am. Our ferry chugged sedately out of Trieste, giving us great views of that city from the water. It glided past Trieste's container port, then past the coal port, and finally across the bay to Muggia yacht harbour. We disembarked just two minutes walk from the town centre, so it was an easy stroll to the town's little shops, bars and restaurants. On the day we went, there was a big weekly market in Muggia, so although it's not a big town - there was plenty to look at while we strolled around for a couple of hours. Then we walked to the Molo Colombo (where the local fishing boats tie up) and climbed a flight of stairs (there's also a wheelchair lift) to the open-air terrace of Ittitourismo La Terrazza (a Fisherman's Cooperative restaurant) where the pleasant staff fed us fresh seafood like Fritto Misto and Spaghetti alle Vongole for very reasonable prices while we enjoyed the view over the town, and watched fishermen bringing their little boats into the mole to unload their daily catch. (If you don't like open-air restaurants, there is a covered section where you can keep out of the sun or wind or rain while still enjoying the views). After our leisurely lunch, we strolled back through Muggia to the ferry wharf, and caught the boat back to Trieste. We all agreed this was a very enjoyable Day Trip. It cost us very little, and the fisherman's co-op restaurant provided us with a delicious seafood lunch and good views at a reasonable price. As good as anything we found in Trieste itself. We thoroughly recommend this day trip to Muggia. Obviously some people come here expecting too much ... but we expected a quiet little fishing port and yacht harbour, with good fresh seafood restaurants and a few shops, and a small slice of history in its church, town square, narrow streets and local architecture ... and that's exactly what we got on our day trip. We all agreed it was an enjoyable worthwhile day-trip. And while you're looking around Muggia, look for the Lions of St Mark on several town buildings ... indicating that the Serene Republic of Venice once ruled here.

Take the bus from central Trieste (it's less than an hour), and come back by the passenger ferry - or do it the other way round - and all at public transport prices. As others have said, there's not a lot here, but the central square and the harbour are pretty enough when the sun is shining, and the "scale" and change of pace make a welcome change from the city. A relaxing drink in one of the several bars overlooking the small marina, a short walk around the town, then lunch in a fish restaurant overlooking the bay - there are several with terraces overlooking the bay. And then it's back to Trieste in time for dinner. What's not to like?

We were very disappointed with what we saw in Muggia. Certainly not a quaint fishing village with a nice outlook - rather a small town that overlooks a coal processing plant and shipping containers! The town can be explored in an hour. We did have nice patisseries and appetisers and a quick swim at the ‘beach’ but we ready to catch a ferry (8 Euros return) only to have to wait from 11.45 till 2.15 for next ferry.

We have spent five nights in Muggia and as pleasant a town as it is that is far too long.
It is a nice town with tight, shaded alleyways and lovely clear water at the docks and makeshift beaches (they have no proper beaches here but a few stretches of concrete and rocks that the locals, both old and young, make great use of) but that is about it.
There is an interesting church in the town square but this is Italy, where isn’t there an interesting church? There are a few eateries but nothing above average and it seems the gluten free wave sweeping the nation back home has not yet hit these shores. My wife is gluten intolerant and once we leave the hotel there are no gluten free options in town at all.
There is a regular ferry to Trieste, and we had a nice walk of an hour or so to the Slovenian border but both these activities require leaving Muggia, hardly a recommendation of the town itself.
All in all, yes a pleasant town but is there anything here you can’t see anywhere else in Italy and better? No, I’m afraid not.

I often take a bike from Slovenia, Koper on Parenzana bike trail to take a coffee in Muggia /Milje. When I visited it for the first time it reminds me little on Dubrovnik, specially when entering through wall gates. Nice place the old town.
