“A bit out of the way depending on where you are, but a good pilgrimage”

I made a vow that I would visit it on my next trip for personal reasons. I was staying in Silvi, Abruzzo and it was about 2 hours. However, it is a beautiful church, but it is not one of the medieval or Renaissance churches we've come to know in Italy. It is relative ly new, starting construction in the 1800's. It was built where Mary, the mother of Jesus was known to appear. The church is beautiful, but to be fair, it will mean a lot more if you are going for a pilgrimage or for religious reasons. If you decide to take the 'steps' up on the side of the basilica, up to the spot where Mary appeared, it is deceiving. They are not short steps but very long, i.e. two steps to walk the step to the next one. And they are not paved and in some spots difficult to walk on, especially if you do not have good walking shoes, sneakers, etc. They have a gift shop, free pamphlets and overall, a nice experience.

“Stunning church and location”

This amazing neogothic church/sanctuary, set on a hill and surrounded by nature, was started in 1890 but only fully completed in 1975! My first visit was way back in 1992. This past summer I returned and found the place to be with easy access, well kept and services nearby (bars restaurants and even resort hotel). The church itself is stunning and imposing with the facade featuring 3 sections,with three portals, two bell towers and an octagonal dome and above it, an octagonal lantern. Within the interior is an octagonal hall , the main altar and side chapels. The day of my visit the church was packed as a wedding was bein celebrated. The sanctuary also hossts a via crucis in the mountain.

What an excellent attraction and place of worship! My (priest) cousin took me to this place on my latest visit to family. I’d never heard of it before!

The church/chapel itself is so marvellously beautiful, and boasts a very interesting history, the story of which is depicted in a dedicated ‘museum’ nearby.

The local countryside displays pockets of statues of historical events in the appearance of the Virgin Mary to two young shepherdesses.

Very interesting, beautiful, amazing and meditative.

Well worth visiting.

Madonna in the mountains

The Santuario of the Madonna Maria Addolorata is located in the mountains of Molise.
She is the patron saint of the Molise region of Italy.
The Madonna first apparition was in 1888.
The church was started in 1890 and finished in 1975. Pilgrims from all over visit this site.
Unless you have a car, it is difficult to reach by local transport, however, from Isernia, its only 10km, an inexpensive taxi.
During the week its very quiet, bring a box lunch and soak in the beautiful vistas from every point of the grounds.

Lovely quiet place. Outside It looks like a Castle. Inside It is beautiful church with paintings of all saints. Really worth to visit.

It is so large a building, one can see it from far away. The architecture is gorgeous.
The setting in the mountains is so quiet and serene, a wonderful place e to meditate and reflect.
