Gorgopotamos Bridge by 2 kiwis
Mei 2019 • Pasangan
For kiwis with an interest in The Greek resistance in WW2 and NZ part in it, this is a worthwhile visit.
This act of bravery by the mainly local forces played a great part in supporting Anzac forces in their struggle in the western desert.
The warm feelings of todays locals towards us are still there and we experienced great kindness when we visited.
(ps Hotel Ena nearby is a great stop with near new facilities and a helpful staff)

A wild, historic and peaceful place . . .
Mar 2019 • Pasangan
A place definitely worth seeing. One wishes the Greek authorities and/or private citizens would take responsibility for adding more historical and explanatory plaques on the site and maintaining it in a dignified fashion. As a Greece I am often embarrassed and ashamed by how Greeks care for much of their cultural patrimony.

impressive bridge
Apr 2018
An impressive bridge which played an important role in a greek history. A nice stop on your way to or from Oiti mountains. Unfortunately nothing much around and rubish in the river (as everywhere in Greece).

The Gorgopotamos Bridge
Mei 2017 • Keluarga
IN September 1942 Colonel F. M. H. Hanson sent for Captains C. E. Barnes and A. Edmonds (my Uncle), and wanted the two sapper officers from the New Zealand Division to join a sabotage party in blowing up an important railway viaduct in Greece against the occupying Nazi forces and the operation which involved British special forces as well as the various factions of the Greek resistance. The saboteurs were to drop by parachute, meet pro-allied Greeks, and with their help destroy the viaduct. They were to be well supplied with explosives and arms.

The two sapper officers studied a blueprint of the Gorgopotamos viaduct and also a photograph showing the Orient express crossing it. In length it was 674 feet and it stood 105 feet above the river. It consisted of seven steel spans supported by four stone and two steel piers.

Barnes and Edmonds struck the fuse caps, waited until they were well alight and then dashed for cover about twenty yards away. Flattened out against the ground, they were shaken by the sudden tremendous blast and by the thousands of pieces of red hot metal flying in all directions.

A Nazi reprisals saw several dozen locals executed in cold blood. There is a memorial of those executed near the bridge. Another in remembrance of those who lost their lives when they celebrated the anniversary of the Gorgopotamos and a hidden mine exploded, killing and injuring some attenders.

There is a pillbox which still sits below the bridge and the pump station ruins also remain. Climb the hill which leads to the area where the yearly commemorations are held. We even passed a turtle making its way up the hill. An interesting piece of history to explore.

History and nature at their best!
Mei 2016 • Keluarga
Gorgopotamos (meaning "the fast running river") is a river. And a village. And a bridge well known to Greeks, as its destruction by the Greek Resistance was the top act against the German forces occupying Greece during the World War II. The bridge itself is a monument that History lovers and photographers will instantly love. The whole area is perfect for short or longer easy walks among amazing green landscapes, rocky riversides and waterfalls. If the day is extremely hot, walk upriver and find your own bathing natural pool. Bring food with you and be prepared for a spectacular picnic. Otherwise, many local tavernas in the village wiil serve you really nice greek food.

Definitely worth visiting!!

A great place to visit in an equally stunning location with lots of greenery & running waters to keep you relaxed.

There are a few memorials around the site to those involved in the blowing up of the bridge & to those who were massacred in reprisals by the Axis forces.

Gorgopotamos is only about a 15-20 minute drive from Lamia and is very easy to find.

Beautiful historic bridge of Gorgopotamos. When I arrived there it was just amazing to look at this beautiful bridge and listen to the river next to it.

Just an amazing place and mesmerizing surroundings.

There are trains passing the bridge approximately every 30-40 minutes. And it is really worth seeing.

Total recommend.
