Stunning Le Corbusier work
Sep 2019
When I came across this work by Le Corbusier while looking through guide books for France, my husband insisted that visiting it was a must. He had learned about it many years ago in an architectural course. Although Ronchamp was not directly on the route we planned to drive,we felt it was well worth the extra time it took to get to it. This very unusual building is constructed of concrete with unusual curves and angles throughout. Inside it is sparse but conveys a feeling of calm and serenity. An outdoor sanctuary area is spacious to accommodate large crowds. The story of how this stunning work came into being is fascinating. This is a must see for architectural enthusiasts and be sure to allow plenty of time to enjoy it.

Corbusier architectural marvel
Jul 2019 • Teman
It is an absolute architectural marvel.
The story behind how it is built, to the site and the design all fabulous.

We took a detailed english tour, the guide is most amazing.

The control use of light and colour is mind blowing.

The roof design for all weathers is creative.

The rain collecting and creating a water fountain, the resonating sound of the prayers and openness is all ethereal.

Notre Dame du Haut

A must to visit while visiting the eastern part of France. We decided to hike the pilgrimage trail that weaves through the beautiful forest. It was an easy climb and took approximately 30 minutes. At the top we were greeted by a big open green space and could see the chapel in the background.
It’s a beautiful Le Corbusier architectural gem. It’s simplicity is what makes it so unique and stunning. Plan on spending most of the day here. Bring a pick nik and enjoy the surroundings and spectacular views.

Fine Architecture of Le Corbusier's!
Jul 2018 • Pasangan
Chapelle Dame du Haut, is a Roman Catholic chapel located in the beautiful French countryside surrounding the small town of Ronchamp. It is situated near Belfort, which is in Eastern France. Built in 1955, it is one of the fine creations of the Franco-Swiss architect, Le Corbusier. The chapel is one of 17 projects (represented in 7 countries) by Le Corbusier, that have been inscribed into Unesco's World Heritage Site list. "They represent the architectural work of Le Corbusier, an outstanding contribution to the Modern Movement". The chapel is situated on a hill, on a site that had previously been occupied by a 4th century chapel that had been destroyed during the 2nd World War. Its simple design features 2 entrances, a main altar and 3 chapels beneath towers. Interestingly, Le Corbusier filled the southern wall, which is just a partition wall, not load bearing, with rubble from the previous chapel, symbolically insuring that the history of the original church would continue with the new.
It functions primarily as a pilgrimage chapel, though on special feast days, large crowds of people attend the site. Le Corbusier had an outside altar and pulpit built so as to allow these crowds access to worship. A statue of the Virgin Mary was recovered from the ruins of the original church. Now encased in a special glass case in the wall, it can be turned to face inwards or outwards, depending on the occasion.
In 2006, a group of nuns, Poor Clares, decided to have a convent constructed by the chapel. There are now a number of buildings on the site associated with the "Poor Clares", as well as a visitor centre. This includes some displays and a small gift store.
We drove in from Belfort, a lovely drive through the French countryside. You enter Ronchamp, follow the signs, and wind your way up a narrow road to the chapel. There is ample parking, you enter the grounds via the visitor centre, and here you pay an entrance fee of 7 euro.
This small "Architecture Wonder" is definitely worth visiting!

A fantastic visit. Note that no electric light is installed inside the church room. Only the sun lightens the room.

One of the Finest Buildings in Europe!
Agt 2018 • Teman
We visited on a hot day in August.
It literally took your breath away
It is considered one of the most important buildings of the 20th century, and represents a shift away from Le Corbusier's early functionalists works that the Modernist architects were following.
We had a picnic outside after our tour!
I took a young 22 year old student
I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in fine art, design and architecture!
We also found a great pizzeria across the road as the drive is long, the weather is hot 31 degrees in August!

You really must make the effort to visit this magic place, religious or not you will feel something. Corbusier was a genius and this example of his brutal architecture is holy to the brain. Trust me, it will blow you away... do not miss the little chapels in the angles, masterpieces of light. If you are a film buff you ll feel you are in Blade Runner or Brazil. Enjoy, I prey you.

Impressive, perfect - superb atmosphere
Jul 2018 • Pasangan
We drove for over 2 hours to visit Le Corbusier's stunning chapel - from our base in Beaune it was an easy if lengthy drive. It had been on my husband' bucket list since he learned about the building as part of his architecture studies over 35 years ago, so this was his chance to realise his expectations....... we were not disappointed, although the white exterior paintwork isn't quite as white as we expected. Inside the chapel has an aura of peace and calm despite the brutal concrete material used to create the beautiful spaces. The curves of the walls envelope the visitor and the light thrown in via the window openings changes throughout the day and is also dependant upon the weather. Information cards in a range of languages encourage people to sit and feel the space as they read and absorb the chapel's history and atmosphere.
Recommend - worth a detour.

Too expensive to enter
Mei 2018 • Keluarga
We drove up the hill, to see that the entrance fee was to high to enter the chapel. With a family of 2 parents and 2 kids, it was around €27,- (2*8 + 2* 5,5).
Maybe we missed a important sight, but we didn't want to spend this amount of money.
