Whilst in Sicily we wanted to see some of it's amazing history and decided a trip to the site of the city of Solunto would make for a good excursion. From our hotel in Cefalu we took the train to Santa Flavia and walked to Solunto. It is mainly uphill although not too demanding, do take plenty of water though. We went on a hot day and needed several stops to have a drink. The ruins are very atmospheric, enough is still there to get an impression of how the city would have looked in its heyday. The setting, overlooking the sea is stunning and worth the trip just for that. Exploring all that is there takes time and also some effort as the city is on a hillside, the old side streets are vert steep. A word of caution, there are snakes about, they are eager to avoid you but be careful if poking around under rocks.

We visited with Sicilian relatives. There was a lot to see. We had a guide though he only spoke Italian-- but using iTranslate app we gathered some info. that we wouldn't have. There is a lot of climbing but we found it fascinating that the ancient ruins were in decent shape. The small museum of artifacts was also good.

Although most of it is ruins and has apparently been excavated by archaeologist, there are marked routes around the site with information on boards about each area in Italian and English. Although there is not much to see the boards are very informative and you can picture what life was like when Solunto was at its peak. There is a small museum with some of the items excavated to see. It cost I think 8 Euros for x 2 adults and a child to enter. Have some change as this venue does not have a cafe or anywhere to seek refreshment other than a reasonably priced vending machine, which vends beautiful cold drinks, biscuits and crisps. As you can guess we went on a hot day. Do not go if you have trouble walking as you will find it hard going.

Truly worth the visit even only if for the views let alone the amazing historic remains. You can walk on the very roads that the Romans and those before them did.

Excellent signage in English - unlike an earlier reviewer I can’t see what they are saying. It is very very beautiful. A must see.

A very interesting site. Bit of a walk and climb to get there from Santa Flavia!! Try to get a lift or transport to the site as some of walking there is a bit strenuous too. 6euros admission. Only some if info in English. The big info boards at beginning of tour have been renewed and are in English . However as you get deeper into the site the info boards are old and weathered and English is not readable. Interesting ruins and informative museum. Fantastic views across coast and island. Worth the climb!! The descent into the port much easier.

We did not know what to expect here but we were pleasantly surprised. There are some ruins and you do have to climb a bit in the heat but it is worth it for the views it offers. There are herds of mountain goats roaming around. You will hear their bells before you see them. It is worth a visit but you will need a car to access it

Visited today. Spent a little over an hour to walk around the site. Sadly, many of the signage boards are in a poor state of repair / unreadable / really poor English translation! There is also thing by way of marked route around the site, making it somewhat random as to whether we’d seen everything. Having said all this, it is worth a visit. Entry cost is €4 per adult

This is an architectural gem, a site spanning centuries from Phoenician times to Roman times.
Drive up the hill and park. Entrance is 4 euro each. Wear sensible shoes as you are basically following an unmade Roman road up a mountain whilst taking in the scenery.
It has a very undeveloped feeling about it, but the benefit is that there’s hardly anyone else around. You can really use your imagination as you wander over ruins, mosaics and barely standing structures overgrown with wild flowers, herbs and wildlife.
Be sure to take water and allow 2-3 hours to soak in the atmosphere.
Not much info in English do research first on Wikipedia etc to understand the history.

Steep above the clementines and the black and white cats and the crumbling ocher palazzo in Santa Flavia. Gorgeous sea views and lichen covered ruins among the grass and wild flowers. Many mosaics left in the sunshine and a fascinating little museum with amazing pottery finds. No temple but a whole village to explore. A favorite!
