No need to stop here since the entire structure is completely covered in scaffolding. Too bad. It looks like this will be the case for some time. The buildings are very old and are in need of repair.

The scholars on the Hospital of "Santa Maria della Scala" in Siena (in particular Stephan H. Epstein) have documented that the Cuna "grancia" isn't one of the oldest owned by this hospital (still at the beginning of the fourteenth century, it seems it was not even existing as such); but that during that century it had a rapid growth, so that before the century's end it switch from non-existence to be - as both for the managed area and for volume of agricultural production - the most important of the many properties of the hospital through the whole Tuscany.
Today, the built testimony of this past importance - as other reviewers have already noticed - is very poorly visible, due to the restoration in progress.
However, since several households are into the building and therefore access can not be completely closed, you can - or at least it was possible to us in October 2014 - to experience what is probably the most impressive build device: that is, the brick ramp that rises through multiple flights from the ground floor to the upper ones, by a gradient weak enough, to allow the animals (mules?) loaded with agricultural products to rise and deliver them into the raised warehouses provided there.
I hope of course that this building is quickly restored and can then properly show its former magnificent appearance.

One of the fortified farms built to protect the properties of the Hospital della Scala in Siena. It's an incredible sight to see but for now can only be appreciated at a distance. It is undergoing a very comprehensive renovation (as of early August 2014) and is totally covered by scaffolding.

The construction workers let me in for a brief peek and the interior is inpressive, but I don't recommend you count on them letting you in.

I'm guessing it will be converted into a 4 star agriturismo -- that's happening to many of the other grancias, abbeys, hospices and other historic buildings in southern Tuscany (and, I'm sure, other parts of Italiy). It's going to be something fabulous to see in another year or so. Now, you can appreciate the exterior -- which itself is darned impressive.
