This is a well presented museum giving good explanations of traditional Madeiran farming, fishing, transportation and craft as well as shopping and home life. Photographs of everyday life are used very well and there are plenty of physical items too. There was a lady weaving on a traditional loom when we visited, who was continuing a family tradition started by her great grandmother.
Within the museum is a small shop selling craft items made by the local community, all monies from which go back to the producers.
It is slightly odd how the ladies in the museum follow your every move (it feels like) to make sure that you don’t touch anything, given that most items being exhibited may be old but are very solid wooden things!

A nice and insightful museum to visit if you are in the area and have an hour to spare. 3 Euro entry per person which is more than worth it. Lots of aspects of life in Madeira in modern history are covered, including fishing, land transport, home life, linen manufacturing and grain milling.

The lady in the museum was very knowledgeable and spoke to us about lots of the exhibits giving us extra insights which was a lovely personal touch.

Not easy to find up a backstreet but is a well presented museum. Friendly lady on desk but the one wandering around was more interested in her mobile phone! We were given an English written guide to the museum which was quite comprehensive but signage around the museum could have been better. The videos were in Portuguese ... maybe they could have been in English but that wasn’t explained to us. It was fascinating to see threshing and flax production still being done by hand 30 years ago. Worth a visit if you have time in your hands in this pretty little town.

This museum is well worth a visit. It captures well the rural life of Madeira in times past. The video showing the hand centric methods of gathering cereal is worth a highlight. The museum is also - apparently - the only example of a mill that processed sugar and cereal at the same time. Helpful staff. Most things labelled in English as well as Portugese. Takes about an hour. Three euro entrance. Open 09.30 till 17.00, except weekends when opens an hour later and closes for lunch. Closed Monday. There is easy parking in the well signposted car park nearby.

A museum full of local life and colour. A great insight into life on the island with clear and interesting displays. There was a local lady weaving who was happy to chat; little figurines going about their daily tasks; and many full size items to admire, especially the stunning woodwork.

The shop had the only Madeiran costume book I found on the island, but also many other items. A good day out using the frequent local bus along the coast from Funchal.

Yesterday we visited Ribeiro Brava - a pretty little town near Funchal. We had read about the small museum which was once a private house originating in the 16th century. The museum is well laid out and each exhibit is explained both in Portuguese and in English. The theme of the museum is that of country life - how rural people on Madeira made a living from the land from sugar, wheat, flax and vines and from fishing. It also shows reproductions of how their houses and shops used to look like. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and there was a demonstration of weaving on a loom. There was also a workshop planned on making musical instruments from cane. I recommend a visit . It's just a short bus ride from Funchal on the no. 80 bus €3.35 one way.
