Visited the area near Capo Passero during our first scooter trip to Sicily. Portopalo is a quiet, nice place and the seafront area next to the island is very tranquil and offers nice views of the island surrounded by the deep blue sea.

This fantastic place is the essence of Sicilian landscapes.
Is a pride of mother earth.
The island, the rocks, the fisherman`houses, the color and the scent of the sea.
If you are a diver then you must go there below the water to visit the submersed caves.
Once you`re there just make a spin around you and look the The Tafuri Castle, and the Tonnara.
And even more the taste of the classic and revised seafood courses.
Just grab your camera, and go.
Build up a memorable experience.

I would have liked to walk or swim to the island, but we could not find the shallow stretch linking it to the mainland, probably wrong time of the day, although later we met some girls who made it across (swimming). We easily found a boat that takes people to and from the island, at a reasonable price (5 euro adults, 2.5 euro children), and we got about two hours in the middle of the day to spend on the island. The first thing you find is the building that used to be the tonnara. It looks like it had been abandoned a long time ago, but there were still nets in decent condition lying around... puzzling. Past the tonnara there is a path that takes you to the other end of the island. This is lovely, in the middle of dwarf palm trees, dark green against the blue of the sea with splashed of golden sand. At the other end of the island there is a religious statue and a building which is nearly as puzzling as the tonnara: completely locked up, not easy to reach, but with a stair lift to get to the (locked) entrance. The walk is not going to take more than an hour... the rest of the time can be spent on the sandy beach facing Portopalo. This is the place where people can walk to when the tide is low.

Can only be reached by boat most of the time. If you feel adventurous you can walk "across the water " to the main land if you know the tides ect. It is a castle left over from times gone by when Sicily was ruled by kings. Isola Di Capo Passero, means literally "island of the main passage" referring to the migration path of birds from Africa. The Island is a sanctuary for wildlife.

We didn't go to the island, we stayed on the coast of Punta Capo Passero. Very "wild" place, IN FACT I ADVISE YOU TO PAY ATTENTION!!!! We met a Sicilian boy whose backpack had STOLEN in a more secluded area...DON'T LEAVE THINGS UNATTENDED.

however, the beach is on a point that is not very large but sandy and not equipped (there are few umbrellas belonging to a single owner)... we stayed in a small, more secluded part with rocks (not really comfortable).

I didn't like it. The color of the sea is very beautiful, but there is no beach, and the little one has stones. The island, which is among other things the private property of one person, is in some places a rubbish dump, given the usual uncivilized ones. Furthermore, be careful, because it is forbidden to reach it by pedal boat, which those who rent them are careful to specify, since some days there are strong and treacherous currents, and furthermore it is, as I said, private. It can be accessed by boat, 5 euros per person return. On the island there is only a ruined remains of an old castle with a lighthouse... this place didn't tell me anything.

The island of Capo Passero can be reached by renting a pedal boat or by being accompanied by boats that offer this service.
On a naturalistic level it is certainly very beautiful but the island is somewhat neglected.
First of all, there is waste - obviously left by uncivilized people - but the Municipality should take care of the cleaning.
Then there is an old abandoned tuna fishery that should be redeveloped.
It is also unacceptable that near the structure there are signs prohibiting access due to the risk of collapse but there are no fences that prevent it
the actual entrance...
