The hike is outstanding in its own way. The trail kind of follows the normal motorway from Thusis towards Chiavenna. That's why around 30% of the time you can hear the engines in the distance. However, to me that was part of the experienice. More than I normally I stood still by the the essence of the modern era. I mean I was walking on ancient roads, feeling the heat of the sun and the tiredness of my legs whereas in the distance I heard the cars driving to the top. Who was feeling more worthy? The ones riding in their cars playing music on Spotify or me, confronted by the mointains, drinking water from a mountainstream, wondering about Roman people who'd witnessed the same stones and edges as I was. To me, I was the lucky one.
Morover, the trail is unique in its variety; steep hills. rocks, forests and lakes all are on the Via Spluga. I understood why Goethe fancied this road so much..

...it really depends where you start from, where you end, whether you want to do the whole route or just some of it.
We walked the entire route from Thusis to Chiavenna last week, which took us four days. The route from Thusis to Splugen is really beautiful and while there are a few sections to climb/descend, we didn't find it particularly challenging and it is very well signposted - you can't really get lost!
The annoyance for us was the constant noise of a busy road that stays with you pretty much from Thusis to Splugen. Sometimes you're walking right next to it, crossing over it, walking on top of it at one point, and it crossing over you. If you don't mind the constant hum of traffic, then fine, but it wasn't quite the experience we were expecting - it's not a minor road.
The most spectacular part of the walk is from Splugen to Isola, which is stunning, and it's at Splugen that the main road takes a different turn.
The trip from Isola to Chiavenna was really good in parts, but as we got closer to Chiavenna, the route lost some of its appeal. So if we were to do this route again, what would we do differently? There are many, well posted hiking trails into the mountains around Thusis and Splugen, if we'd have known in advance about the road noise, we would have avoided the via Spluga between Thusis and Splugen and taken a higher route through the mountains to reach our accommodation.

Via Spluga or Spluegen pass is very close to Lake Como Italy, spanning to Stuttgart Germany in the Alps.
It is a classic hiking route.

The shortest connection between Stuttgart and the lake of Come is via the Spluegen Pass (Via Spluga).
Do not try during the winter months as it will most probably closed because a lift is going across the street leading to the pass.
Take your time to see the magnificent landscape.
There are some rules to be watched - please do not enter on the tunnels when coming downhill before you are not 100% sure there no traffic coming in your direction. Some of the galleries do not have enough space to let two cars pass. The uphill traffic has the right of way. This may lead to the situation that you have to backup (if there is no car behind you) to give way to the car coming uphill. I have been blocked already for quite some time in such a situation - not amusing!
On the rout down to Chiavenna there are quite a few points to stop and ahem a look at the mountains and look.

We hiked the Via Spluga from Thusis (Switzerland) to Chiavenna (Italy) on September 2016.
It is most definitely one of the most beutiful hikes I've done.
The trail itself is very well marked and signed, so there is no navigation challenge. Having said that, there are a few places along the trail where attention is needed in order not to get off the trail.
Difficulty level is moderate in the sense that you are not climbing mount Everest, but there are many steep climbs and descents, so you do need to be in good shape and have good walking shoes.
It is also recommended to keep an eye on the weather. We climbed to the Spluga pass on a bad weather day (rainy and cloudy). It was a great experience, but temperatures up at the pass was close to zero degrees celcius and very windy, so make sure you bring winter gear with you.
All in all, it is very recommended to those who love hiking.

Completed the via spluga from Thusis to Chiavenna in 4 days with a group of 9 friends. We booked through viaspluga.com who were brilliant. The walk is probably a 'moderate' with the Coast to Coast and the Inca trail being harder, but this is a beautiful walk, with varied scenery and some fantastic hotels en route. As a group we had a fantastic time, the walks were hard enough to be memorable without being too taxing that you couldn't enjoy the spa, sauna, swimming, eating and drinking afterwards. A great experience!

Via Spluga is a great hike, even for people with little experience in the mountains. Most would do it in 4 days, but we decided to get it done in 3. If you want to do so, too, I'd advise the following stages: Thusis to Gasthaus Rofflaschlucht on day 1, then to Montespluga on day 2 and then on the third day to Chiavenna. There are plenty of fountains along the way as well as opportunities for swimming in the crystal clear streams.
