It is good to experience in the museum how in the old days one would live and work on Antarctica. The gift shop has nice articles to buy. In the coming years I will be smiling when I see my glasses cleaning cloth with the Antarctic Ski Club logo

I was there, when I sailed with my colleagues with the RRS Ernest Shackleton, back to the Falkland Islands.
It was a nice stop over, and to see how our colleagues used to live on a base station in the early days, in comparison with how we live now.

When we were there, the station was used closed for the season, so it was only us and the penguins.

If you are a history buff you will love your visit here. All the old tins and tools, the living quarters with drawings still on the wall. It literally is like stepping back in time. They have done a wonderful job preserving such a unique part of history. Definitely worth the visit, it’s a history buffs heaven.

This was a surprising stop on our Quark expedition. Amazing that brave souls would put their lives at risk to live in this forbidden climate. Well done museum is full of old relics and interesting artifacts. When you’re done, explore outside where hundreds of penguins take up residence. Really cool place at the end of the world.

Fun to see how researchers managed in such a remote location years ago. Views and penguins outside are great!

We took a zodiac ride to Port Lockray from our Cruise ship Le Lyrial as one of our days adventures in Antarctica and it is truly an amazing place. A small museum has been "set in time" to the days it was an operating during the war. It was like stepping back in time, faded artwork on many of the walls is very good, and the kitchen is well stocked with items from the time. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase items and post letters/cards from the bottom of the world with Royal Mail. It was -8C and snowing with a strong wind chill factor the day we were there, so it gave us a very good idea of conditions. Fantastic morning. The base is still manned by British staff on rotation for 2 or 3 months at a time who also undertake maintenance of the base. All profits from the sale of gifts goes back into the Antarctic Heritage Trust. Highly recommended.

Port Lockroy was one of our most interesting zodiac cruises on our Orbridge Cruise with Quark Expeditions! The research staff were very friendly and gave us very interesting information on the history of the research base prior to our tour. The museum had very interesting artifacts on the history of the past explorers. There was a great gift shop & all purchases went to support work with the gentoo penguins that were abundant around the buildings of the base! There was also a post office that would stamp your passport and you could mail letters back to friends & family from Antarctica! Great experience--must see!!

During WWII the British occupied this location in Port Lockroy. The House is now a museum that preserves the harsh life in the Arctic for sites that were occupied year around. Be certain to observe some of the folk art and as you might expect, they also had a bar.

Bransfield House is a restored base at Port Lockroy by the British currently uses as a museum, post office and gift shop for visitors. It is funded by Antarctic Heritage Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving historical huts in Antarctica. We have the chance to visit this museum and viewed the artifacts inside. Mailing of post cards from the Post Office and purchase of souvenirs in the Gift Shop here were "MUST" from most of our cruisemates from the Expedition Cruise ship apart from taking photos on the simple houses and gentoo penquins around. While we were enjoying the scenery and taking photos on this isolated island, we have to admit the courage of all the staff working here by turns for a few months as the place was really isolated from the rest of the world. Highly recommended.

Bransfield House is the museum at Port Lockroy, which was a British research station until 1962. It is now a popular stop for passengers on cruise ships visiting the Antarctic Peninsula. An interesting museum and there is an attached post office and gift shop. We were only allowed ashore for 40 minutes, so everyone on our ship could get time ashore. When the station was established during WWII the gentoo penguins were not there, but now they live in close proximity to the museum and other buildings on the site. A great place to visit!
