Stunning mosaics

Monreale deserves most of an afternoon. The mosaics are dazzling and impressively detailed, especially considering that they’d been wrought in 1123. Some seem almost whimsical in their depictions of Biblical stories, especially those from the Hebrew Scriptures.

Disgraceful presentation of Monreale cathedral

The mosaics of Monreale cathedral are a world treasure. It's a shame that the caretakers of this UNESCO world heritage site make it's appreciation so difficult because of a disgraceful lack of lighting. I was told that the cathedral remains in dark, except for services and evening performance. If you visit any other time, you have little hope to adequately see these magnificent works. The south wall is particularly difficult because of the location of windows that obscure all their adjacent mosaics. The same for the west wall. The apse is lit, but because you do not have access to the presbytery, one cannot really see the north or south transepts which contain many beautiful mosaics. This is all in stark contrast to the Cappella Palatina, another fabulous world heritage site, in Palermo, which is very well lit at all times. Perhaps the Fondazione Federico II which runs the Capella thinks it worthwhile to spend some of the hefty admission fees (that both places charge) so that visitors can at least see and appreciate their masterpieces. If one has only limited time in Palermo and has to choose between these two sites, choose the Capella Palatina.

Impressive mosaic pictures

This cathedral is on a hill overlooking Palermo and from the bus park there is quite a walk up steps up the hill. As an aside, as we passed through the square to the cathedral there were about a dozen Maserati cars strutting their stuff - a lot of value in one place.
Anyway - the cathedral contains many ancient mosaic elaborate pictures. They are very impressive.

If you are in Palermo, this is a must see. There are steps up from the parking area, passing number of touristy shops. However , it is worth it, the cathedral is stunning we had a guide which helped, explaining the various mosaics
which depict stories from the testaments. The cloisters are also worth visiting, beautiful columns with different carvings on top. Well worth its UNESCO status. The town itself is pleasant with views over Palermo to the sea.

Simply stunning & fully deserving of its UNESCO status.

I didn’t walk through the cloister area, nor took an audio guide as I simply wanted to look at the mosaic artwork which I found unbelievable.

I did pay the €4 to walk on the roof which provided distant panoramic views of Palermo & the surrounding piazza & suburbs.

We got there at 3:30 & I was lucky enough to find street parking within 100 meters.

We loved, loved, loved this cathedral! The gold mosaics were everywhere, in so many different patterns. It is hard to take your eyes off the walls. Don't miss the cloisters. Over 200 columns with figures carved around the tops and more gold mosaics-no two are alike. This is a must-see!!

The English audio guide was so helpful.you are constantly in awe at the detail . Climbing to the heights you are overcome with gratefulness for the precision of the artists..the Bible stories come alive at the quality of the mosaic ..same style as in st marks . But far better . Deserves the UNESCO recognition .

This is an amazing Cathedral with 6,500 square metres of mosiacs decorating the upper half of the church. You can get the 389 bus from Palermo up to this little town. Entry for the Cathedral, crypt, roof, museum and cloisters is €13. There are very few English signs so a guided tour or audio guide is probably a good option.

Monreale is just 30 mins bus from Palermo but a world away from the bustle and noise. The Duomo is the crown here and well worth seeing. Nice compact town with views over the spread if Palermo to the coast. Take cash for bus tickets! Get the bus from the ticket kiosk near Porta Nouvo… easy!
