Burial ground for the early Protestant community
Apr 2018 • Sendiri
One of three World Heritage attractions at Camoes Square north of the Ruins of St. Paul, this is was the burial site of the early community of Protestants that settled in the Portuguese colony.

The cemetery dates back to the early 19th century. It includes two levels and 162 tombs including British painter George Chinnery, who spend much of his life here in Macau and Robert Morrison, for whom the small chapel upon the site is named. Do have a brief look inside the chapel if it is open at the time of your visit.

Due to the more isolated location of Camoes Square, a visit to the Old Protestant Cemetery is a lower priority for those with limited time. However, for more comprehensive visits of Macau World Heritage, you can conveniently visit the cemetery along with Casa Garden and St. Anthony's Church when spending time in this area of the city centre.

Interesting stop

We stopped here while walking around the historic centre of Macau - it is a short walk beyond the ruins of St Pauls, adjacent to the Casa Garden & Camoes Garden. It was interesting to look at the tombstones and imagine how these people ended up in Macau.

Cool Find!

We were wandering around Macau near the St. Anthony's Chapel and we ran across this old protestant cemetery. This is a very tiny cemetery, yet it is really cool to check out if you are in the area. Plan for a 15 minute visit. Most of the graves are the above the ground style which is uncommon for where we are from (Utah, USA).

Interesting to see...

Interesting to see this space in Macau -- not easy to get to from the main attractions in the city, but if you're walking around in the area stop by and spend a few minutes looking around and reading some of the inscriptions on the grave stones.

This is a very magical place with a spiritual feel. If you are in the area then it's well worth a visit. Especially moving are the children's graves.

The beautiful final resting place of many foreigners in Macau; a peaceful respite in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Macau.

aside from the dead, we were the only ones there on the day we visited...small cemetery dating back to the 18th Century which gives you some idea of the many people who must have passed through macau from foreign lands with the majority meeting an early end. lovely engraved tombstones and inscriptions, quite moving and very peaceful. next to the luis camoes garden which is also well worth a visit

Tucked away behind walls and a closed church, this is a consecrated place well worth a visit ifor anyone interested in the history of Macau. Check out in particular the children's graves on the upper terrace.

Small and not very quiet
Sep 2015 • Sendiri
Next to the Luis Camoes garden and the Casa Garden so easy to look into, but it's small and not much of a sanctuary, especially with the lack of seating.

Solemn corner of Macau.

The Old Protestant Cemetery is in the historic district of old Macau, and there is a small, white chapel on the grounds, and the cemetery itself lies below. The graves themselves are from individuals from many countries, and the oldest ones are from the late 18th century.

Included on the tomb stones are not just the name, age, and dates, but also sometimes the dedication and the manner in which the interees met their respective demise. Most of these are men who were sailors, and died young. Many died in accidents.

One of the more important tombs is that of Robert Morrison, the Protestant missionary Robert Morrison, who translated the bible into Chinese.

I've been here several times, and each time sees very few visitors.
