7,367 men are laid to rest here, among them the British, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Indians, Greeks and Polish whose blood stained these sands during those fateful days of 1940/1942. Their memory is honoured in this cemetery. 815 lie with no name. Countless more their bodies have never been recovered and they remain out there in the Egyptian desert. Just down the street you will find the El Alamein Museum, which details the history of these bloody battles and honours the legacy of the thousands of men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in these terrific campaigns. "I shall not have died in vain, if you who live be free to live your lives in world-wide unity."
