Was nice to have a walk through this beautiful forest, but animals we managed to see only few, they were apparently sleeping during our visit.

I came there to make some wild photography. I really loved that place. I went there lately in the evening when most animals are active. It was really great walk between wild boars without any fence lol.

Some have commented negatively that this is just a zoo. Technically I cannot argue with them but it is one such that I have never had the pleasure of visiting before.

The main trail is evidently c.7 km long but with other paths and back-tracking you should probably expect to walk 10km on a day-long visit.

As odd as this may sound, my far-better-half and I have driven from Prague where we had spent a few days with friends (all visiting from England) as we wanted to visit the forest as a whole but specifically the animal enclosures.

Obviously animals are meant to be wild but the fact is that zoos do provide for education and can promote an interest in animals in younger generations. Irrespective of categorization, if someone dropped you at Lusen and you wore blinkers so that you could see only the enclosures then you would not know that you were not seeing Lynx and Wolves in the wild so vast are their living areas.

We spent a number of hours at the Wolf viewing point and saw nothing except glimpses through the trees. Sure this was a little disappointing but again it proves that this is no ordinary facility where the animals are subject to unavoidable scrutiny by the masses.

Perhaps due to the time of year, and visiting at around 8 am we found the place to be delightfully quiet in the main but even when school groups were also there there seemed to be a genuine interest and respect for peace and quiet not generally evident at home.

The woods themselves are home to birds, mice/voles and 'red' squirrels and the whole experience is delightful even with the occasional lack of appearance by star attractions.

Close to the Baumwipfelpfad, there is this wildlife park with lots of various animals. Unfortunately when we visited all the animals were a bit lazy to move or doing anything else than sleeping :) but it definitely worth to visit. Back and forth in the park you need to walk around 6-7 kms from entrance and back to exit. Great place to visit with kids.

Couple this with the Baumwipfelpfad and you're in for a great day out.
This freigelande holds many species of birds and animals, most native to Europe, and some sadly endangered.
A meandering walk through the forest leads to many enclosures, where, if you're lucky you'll get to see Bears, Lynx, Elk, Otters and more. During one visit we were lucky enough to see a mother Lynx with her 2 off-spring, who appeared to be our for a photo-shot going by their positioning on the hill, and the number of cameramen around.
It was December when we last visited, so many of the animals were noticeable by their absence - hidden away in the forest, I suspect. However, that didn't detract from the enjoyment, as there's still plenty to see. Having said that, we've been here several times over the last 10 years, and have yet to see the elusive Beaver.
Entrance is free, apart of parking fees and is open all year round - I'm even told you can come here in the middle of the night, if you dare. Remember, this is a forest, and not all animals are in enclosures.

The place reminds me of both Ähtäri Zoo and Ranua Zoo in Finland.

The animal species shown in the Tier-Freigelände live or have lived in the area of the Bavarian Forest. E.g. the elks have been imported from Sweden as there are almost none left in the national park area. The animals have been sterilized as there are no good homes for the offspring.

The area is a good place for a walk. There were couples doing Nordic walking, dog walkers, people with huge cameras taking photos, and smal groups just enjoying a beautiful Saturday in the area.

The Freigelände is not "frei"- the animals are caged although the cages are a bit bigger than in a normal zoo.

I was hoping to have an experience more like the US national parks. We went expecting to find a decent 2-3 hour hike, I'm sure there are nice trails but we found no centralized form of information to help with that. Ended up walking this trail with the animals and was very disappointed. The tree top walk was more enjoyable. The forest and general area is very pretty and we only had half a day to play with so couldn't explore further.

We enjoyed the 2.5hour guided walk to see the animals. Much better then walking alone. The tours are guided by volunteers, who are really very knowledgeable about the forest and the animals. So much background information is given and the guides know where to find the animals. Costs only eu5,=pp (50%reduction with "guestekarte" if you stay in the area). Tours start every day at 11:00am, at old-schonau or at new-schonau meeting points (Treffpunkt) on alternating days). So check which day at which location! No need to make reservations.

It was great, the walk through the forest, the search for the animals and we were soooooo lucky. We found the wolfs, the bears, the lynx, the elks, saw a lot of birds and had a great day.

We were grateful for the tree-covered paths round the nature park, as we were there on a very hot day. Unfortunately, most of the larger animals were also suffering from the heat and were hard to spot. We did see some deer, black storks, beavers, etc.
It was an enjoyable experience, but it involved a lot of walking up and downhill and is not too suitable for elderly tourists.
