We are national trust members and decided to visit whilst we were in area. The grounds are extensive and stunning. As you follow the paths round the lake you come across all different temples and buildings, all beautiful and all different. Stowe is used for filming period pieces and you can see why.
Stowe house is absolutely beautiful but
we didn't go in the house as there is an additional cost of £7.50 each, a shame as would have liked to, but the additional charge put us off.
We spent a good couple of hours seeing everything around the grounds, thats how big it is, very beautiful and well looked after.

We visited the parklands National Trust and Stowe House which is not National Trust and has an extra charge.
We parked at the National Trust car park and enjoyed a coffee and scone at the café. Lovely outside patios and good sized inside eating on a wet day.
We then walked through the parklands to Stowe House. This took 25 minutes brisk walking. The house was open for free flow or guided tours of either 20 minutes or 40 minutes. We would certainly recommend the 40 minute tour during which you get to learn about the families who lived in the house, the architecture and artifacts. Our guide David was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The time flew past.
There is also an outstanding museum for adults and children alike. The talking portraits are amazing and answer your questions about the house and its residents.
You can also get drinks and snacks at a small cafe.
Following our visit to the house and you need to check website for opening times we walked slowly back through the parklands past beautiful lakes.
Would really recommend a visit here.

This was our first visit to Stowe House and Park. What an impressive place. The approach road to the estate is a real Wow and that's before one reaches the car park.
The grounds are huge and varied with lakes, bridges, meadows, buildings and grassed areas. Visiting in December it was quite muddy in places but nothing a stout pair of walking boots couldn't deal with. We picked up a map at the New Inn at the start of the walk and were pleased to have done so.
The house was open and we booked a 20 minute guided tour. We didn't get our guides name but he was such an interesting and informative man. We were the only people in his tour. There aren't that many rooms open but those that are all gave a fascinating story to them. The fact that this is a school and the students use these rooms seems to bring them to life.
The visitor exhibition at the house was so informative and interactive. One of the we've seen at any National Trust property.
It should be mentioned that the grounds only are NT. There is a fee to enter the house although NT members receive a discount.
Without exception the staff we encountered on our visit were so friendly and welcoming from Stuart at the New Inn entrance, the lady in the bookshop, the cafe and visitor centre staff at the house and our guide. All of them were a credit to NT and Stowe House.
We hope to return in the spring or summer when the grounds will be ablaze with flowers and shrubs.
A remarkable place.

Our tour guide, Tim Kraus, was an excellent presenter of the history of Cincinnati and its role in the underground and abolitionist movements. He could have talked all day long. We stayed almost two hours and had all kinds of questions. I've rarely enjoyed a historical visit like this. Hence, I highly recommend a visit!

We visited both the house and grounds. The house tour was amazing … highly recommended. The building has such history . If you’re expecting vast opulence then you will be disappointed but the restoration work is fantastic and I look forward to returning. The grounds are extensive with lots of stop offs at monuments to keep you occupied. Take some comfy walking shoes as you could be on your feet for some time.

Unfortunately the house was closed when we visited, there was a memorial service taking place, but the museum was open and this was very interesting. The grounds are enormous, and there are so many things to see, so much history. We had a terrific day, and will be back to have a look inside the house.

Great spot to take a picnic with the family. Lots of grounds to cover to stretch your legs and a rather impressive house! Even better if your a national trust member!

Can you just book tickets for the guided tour when you’ve finished your walk through the gardens, I can’t see us being able to pre book on line ( much as I usually like to) as I’m not sure when we will arrive at the house...

From memory we ‘booked’ the guided tour on entry to the facility - i.e. where you either show your NT cards or pay admission - just as you walk up from the car park. I think it is more a case of being told what time the guided tours commence rather than booking and they start outside the house.

I think the same as when school is operational. We only saw about six rooms
If you want to see a grand English house you might be better going to Blenheim it's about 20 miles from Stowe
