Situated 16 km from the centre of Tarapoto it is easily accessible from the village of San Antonio - there is a little local restaurant there too - Entrance fee is 3 pesos.
The walk is about 1 hour to reach the falll. BUT be aware that you will need to crois the Rio two time before reaching the fall. It is about 1 meter deep so be prepare to get a little bit wet and have a waterproof bag for your phone and papers. But the rest is easily accessible.
It is ok in the dry season not sure when it is rainy. Some places might be a bit muddy

What makes the Huacamaillo Waterfall so great, is the trekking you have to make to get there. It takes around and hour and a half, and you will have to cross the river around four times (make sure you bring some shoes you don't mind getting wet, and wear comfortable clothes). But the trek is worth it. The waterfall is beautiful and, since not many people go there on week days, it'll probably be empty.

One of the highlights of my trip to Tarapoto

This is great waterfall with one of the better swimming pools. It is alitte bit of a walk to get there but work it. You will also pass some great street food on the way there. You will need to cross the river so make sure u bring the right kinda of shoes.

We booked this trip with Martin Zamora tours and got a friendly guide who explained us all the plants and animals during the tour.
You need good walking shoes for most of the path, and best you buy some cheap rubber sandals with grippy bottom in the local market for crossing the river. You also need to bring drinking water.

You reach the place from San Antonio de Cumbaza, where a big colorful sign shows you the entry to the walk. Of course, later you will not have signs where you would really need them, and if it rains, the path can get really bad, so I do not recommend you to go without guide.

The walk was all the time along one or the other side of the Rio Cumbaza. At some places, you need to cross the river. The guide showed us a lot of animals and plants. Some trees are inhabited by really agressive ants - if you know that, you will not touch all the trees without looking first at them. There were also nice big butterflies, and big spiders, and small yellow frogs.

The waterfall itself is very high and has a really big natural swiming pool. If you dare you can jump from th big stones, as the water is at least 4 meters deep. It is of course colder water that comes from the high mountains, but it has a nice refreshing temperature for swimming,

There were some other people, a few tourists and locals, but you have really enough space for yourselves.

You walk about 2h in each direction and can stay as you like. Of course, the guide will take food there if you want to. We had the famous local "Juanes de gallina" which are wrapped into banana leaves.
