A rainy stormy day in the gorgeous autumnal colours1
We drove around the dams and there are little stop off points, some passing places.
We only did two of the dams and will take dad back for a look at the third when we are back in the area.
Beautiful views, amazing engineering and good for the soul!

Excellent all day visit with walking by or round dams depending on how your walking is visitor centre is full of info bike hire shop and excellent information from staff also coffee vending type machine ideal if cafe is shut. Good day out in all weathers

This is a fabulous place for views.
We travelled through the Dams. What an experience! We had previously driven through, but not seen it all.
It was October, so a quieter time and easy to drive around.
There's a different view round every corner.
We visited the tourist centre, which is such a good place, with a great cafe, well stocked shop and an informative film about the dams.
Also lots of parking available, a children's play area and walks.
Definitely would recommend a visit

Great for walking would take you all-day to see all 6 Dams we seen the four furthest but next time we go were seeing the last two dams.

Ended up walking 3 or so miles without really seeing anything. Tried following the map and guide they give out/sell but, fatally for any directions, they don’t make clear the starting point or direction of travel. Gave up and started to walk towards Rhayader but it is mainly along the road. Gave up again, came back, drove to Rhayader in need of some new outdoorsy clothes and on the basis it bills itself as the outdoor clothing capital of Wales. It is not. Sure the dams etc are majestic, just bring your own map.

Easy parking on an initially rainy day, then visited the Visitor Centre which had an excellent variety of resources and gifts for sale.
Walked up the valley on the designated path around the reservoire. The views and scenery are beautiful and what a brilliant way to spend four hours walking.

Picturesque area and not too commercial. Unfortunately not much open on a weekend and slightly run down.

Haven't been to the Elan Valley for quite a few years now. Decided to stay in Kington and visit the dams and reservoirs. Enjoyable day.

Great visit and a lovely walk around the dam area lso dog friendly and easy or harder walks.the views of the dam are outstanding, then a drive to all the other dams in the area is well worth it .

We had visitors from Suffolk and we took them to the elan valley. We had never been there before , even though we had passed through Rhayader. The reservoirs are superb.
The visitor centre at the start is excellent and very helpful.
We traveled to the first reservoir and got out to take photos.
There are parking spots at each one. The views are stunning .
We went up to the final one and the dam there was a sight. Coming back down the valley we did encounter a bus and vans coming up the road , which made it a bit tight.
I would think it gets busy on sunny days. Well worth the trip.

Hi none are overflowing at present as we haven't had any rain recently, sorry.
Hi, is the accessible trail buggy friendly (I.e not gravel) thanks

The Elan Valley Trail is a family friendly trail for families. Ideal for cycling and walking. It is tarmac between Caban Coch Dam and Garreg Ddu. This is approx 1 mile. The rest is smooth gravel.

Ah yes she visited last weekend and the water was flowing over the big one where it flows over evenly (very impressive with snow on the mountains apparently!)
Do you have to pay to get in? If so, how much?

The valley is free but if you park at the visitor centre they charge for that I believe

Hi there was never a village as it was a farming community, some foundations are visible and some of the garden walls of one of the manor houses

There's a visitor centre at the mouth of the valley, which has a nice cafe, serves hot & cold food, drinks and cakes, has an outdoor play area for kids, and tables and chairs to sit and eat your lunch inside and out. All beside the river and underneath the main dam in a steep sides spectacular valley. For directions etc just look up Visitor Centre, Elan Valley (TA won't let me post the url. (why not ? d'oh)
It's a truly beautiful part of Wales. Enjoy your visit.
May be a silly question but do you have to pay a fee for walking round the dam?

No just a small charge to park of £2 which covers all of the car parks through the valley. Show the parking ticket in cafe at visitors centre and get a discount!
