This dam, which is well over 100 years old, is an incredibly important feature in rural Wales. Built in 1903, the dam is over 120 feet tall and provides hydroelectric power as well as drinking water to Birmingham, England. The structure is quite impressive and amazingly well preserved considering its age.

We were able to book a visit to the dam and walk through the dam wall, with a stop at the middle point where the control valve is. The dam is open quite frequently during the school holidays.
Park at the bottom of the dam and walk up the trail. The path has been repaired thanks to the team. It's dark and eerie as you go through the wall and to be able to pop up in the middle is a great privilege. There were guides at the main points and they were full of useful facts. Once through the dam there is a beautiful walk back down the other side of the valley where you rejoin the carpark.
Kids and big kids will love this.

Breathtaking scenery especially in the autumn
Very good visitor center and accessible walking / cycling trail

Buy an open day ticket (online) so the guides are on hand for your questions. Apparently the best time to see the dams in full flow is dec to march

Can walk up to it and view it from the top also, another impressive dam, will get some stunning colours in the autumn.

How amazing is nature. The roar and speed of the water was incredible. The dam is beautiful. Spectacular. There is a space to park for a couple of cars and you can walk down the side of the dam for a better look. It would have been better for us if it hadn't been raining. But it was well worth seeing the dam in the rain.

Took a trip around the Elan Valley and all of the resavouirs, great sceneary and driving roads well worth the trip.

We had the chance to visit the penygarreg dam open day. The whole elan estate is absolutely beautiful so any reason to visit. We walked through the dam wall to the water tower where rangers would answer any questions. The views were spectacular. A must visit if in the mid Wales area
