Interesting, we missed the "Excalibur" so we have to go back in the future!
Sep 2019
We decided to have a stop here, thinking we could make it in half hour (because we thought that it was ONLY the abandoned abbey in the middle of nowhere) but as 1st timers we did some mistakes. Any normal visit, may take 1.5 hours, because looking a place to park the car, figure out where to go, buy the tickets, pictures, contemplation time, drinks and toilets easily is gone the hour or more for both places (abbey and chapel). To start, if coming with own transport, the area addresses everybody to park in the huge parking lot where there are tourist buses (the left side) this one is fine if have plenty time; a small tip (to save some walking time); if going to the chapel to see the similar Excalibur keep driving forward through the cypresses road and park by the chapel; then to visit the abbey, drive back and get the road to the abbey, there is a restaurant bar with parking places. It is said that St. Galgano was born in the area (town of Chiusdino) and lived lavishly; after a couple of celestial visions involved with Archangel Michael, he started to change in favour of a humble life of prayer and isolation. While he was looking some wood to plant a cross, he plunged the sword in the ground since then nobody could removed it. When he died in XII century, the chapel was built in his honor and a number of miracles were reported; a century later, the cross-shaped abbey was built by Cistercian monks in his memory, lived for century and decayed. P.S. The chapel is another attraction listed, the Eremo di Montesiepi

Nice stop and nice place to make special pictures. It's a short visit, but nice to do. Parking is free, but you have to walk 15 minutes to the abbey.

San Galgano left me speechless. The abbey is immense and very well preserved. Standing in the abbey, looking up at the sky will leave you in awe. It dates back to the 14th century and is still used for events. Your ticket gives you entrance to the Eremo di Montesiepi, a solemn church that dates back to the 12th century. Here you can see the sword in the stone, which harkens to the King Arthur lore. Do not miss the Abbey, you will be thrilled and amazed when you see it!

We decided for a day trip and ended here ... WOW .... is all I can say. Beautiful day, no rushing and no crowds. We stopped first at the little bar/restaurant in front of the abbey for lunch and had one of the best meals .... right down to dessert. All homemade, delish, I suggest you to try the meringue cake.
After that stroll to the abbey for a chance to take pics and then a stroll up hill to the monastery where you will find the sword in the rock. Easy ride back to Siena.
Beautiful place and the drive even though very curvy was easy to do.

Ruins of an abbey where monks used to live. Once inside one can imagine how impressive it must have been. Take a panoramic photo to see the shape of the cross. Duration 15 - 30 minutes. 4 € entry fee.

My best friend's wedding was at this amazing place! Highly recommended for destination weddings. Pictures don't do this place justice.

With so many things to do and see in Toscana this is a wonderful historical site that takes less than 2 hours to see including the chapel on the top of the hill with the sword in rock.

Abandoned ancient abbey in Tuscany region that is not well know except with the locals. We learned of this hidden, off the normal tourist paths through a concierge. It’s very beautiful and you can truly appreciate the architecture. Small entry fee to tour the inside. There is a restaurant and snack shop. Bring your walking shoes.

great place, abbey with missing roof, somewhat closer to the skies. It is a very unique experience to visit this place. Special indeed. Don't miss it!
