Now in ruins, but the ruins are spectacular. Once upon a time this was a great abbey, built to support the community that developed around the story of San Galgano who - as the story goes - plunged his sword into the rock, where it remains to this day. The sanctuary of San Galgano is at the top of the hill nearby and is beautifully calm and peaceful. There is an excellent little shop attached to it, selling all kinds of local products such as soap, honey, liqueurs, cheeses, fabrics and cards. Well worth stopping here if you are passing or are in the area. The views from various points along the road are stunning. This is real Tuscany!

The Abbey is said to have been constructed near the site of where San Galgano lived as a hermit during the last years of his life in the 12th century. A Chapel on the nearby hill has been built over what is believed to be the tomb of San Galgano. There is an unsealed path that leads from the Abbey up the hill to the Chapel.

A new car park had been built since our first visit some years ago which meant that there was an approximately 500/600 metre flat walk though cypress tree lined roads to the entrance to the Abbey. Entrance was EUR5.00 per adult.

The Abbey was built over approximately a 60 year period in the 13th century but by the end of the 14th century most of the monks had departed following raids by mercenaries who plundered the Abbey. The Abbey was subsequently left in a state of decay with its roof gone and much of the ruins taken as building material for other purposes. It is nevertheless, an impressive structure considering when it was built and given the height and length of its nave.

Worth a look.

The review from Gabby L below is completely incorrect, the Abbey is beautiful and has a rich history.

If it's good enough for Kimi Raikonnen to be married there it's good enough for us.

There's really nothing to see here. It's a waste of time and money to tour this place unless you ABSOLUTELY just have to see it. The abbey is empty and roofless. Nothing really interesting about it.

Beautiful place. Easy parking and proper paths to walk along ( I use a wheelchair, so ideal) If you are lucky you might get to see a wedding taking place - the abbey is still open to the public when ceremony taking place. Places to get refreshments within walking distance

If it wasn’t for the lightning which stroke the roof of this abbey back in 1786, it wouldn’t have been so famous, because it was never restored and became an attraction. Have you ever watched the movie “Nostalgia” but the Russian director Andrej Tarkovskij? Well, it’s set there.

Beautiful visit to the abbey. Located right next door to Eremo di Montesiepi (where the short and stone is located).

The ruins of the San Galgano abbey are both beautiful and moving due to the tragic history of the place and its relationship to major European history disasters (wars, the great plague).

You can walk around the ruins, see the sword the founding monk set in the stone (the reverse of Excalibur).

A great place for a walk and history lesson

Nice stop and nice place to make special pictures. It's a short visit, but nice to do. Parking is free, but you have to walk 15 minutes to the abbey.

We decided to have a stop here, thinking we could make it in half hour (because we thought that it was ONLY the abandoned abbey in the middle of nowhere) but as 1st timers we did some mistakes. Any normal visit, may take 1.5 hours, because looking a place to park the car, figure out where to go, buy the tickets, pictures, contemplation time, drinks and toilets easily is gone the hour or more for both places (abbey and chapel).

To start, if coming with own transport, the area addresses everybody to park in the huge parking lot where there are tourist buses (the left side) this one is fine if have plenty time; a small tip (to save some walking time); if going to the chapel to see the similar Excalibur keep driving forward through the cypresses road and park by the chapel; then to visit the abbey, drive back and get the road to the abbey, there is a restaurant bar with parking places.

It is said that St. Galgano was born in the area (town of Chiusdino) and lived lavishly; after a couple of celestial visions involved with Archangel Michael, he started to change in favour of a humble life of prayer and isolation. While he was looking some wood to plant a cross, he plunged the sword in the ground since then nobody could removed it. When he died in XII century, the chapel was built in his honor and a number of miracles were reported; a century later, the cross-shaped abbey was built by Cistercian monks in his memory, lived for century and decayed.

P.S. The chapel is another attraction listed, the Eremo di Montesiepi
