A lovely white area. The castle is in good repair and a nice church ruins and graveyard near by. Ideal area to walk or cycle

Ruin of a tower, located just next to a road. Nice view of it's not too foggy. It is definitely worth visiting after reading at least a bit about Grainne

A nice little stop along the Atlantic Drive, will be of interest to kids worth stopping at. Information baords a little further on past the castle at the pier.

Was on the wild Atlantic way and passed and stopped. The information was good in the car park. The castle itself is normal but worth a stop.

Grace O'Malley's Castle is, like many Irish castle's is a stronghold tower house. Grace O'Malley, the "Pirate Queen" used this as one of her strongolds on the water, and it is now a national monument. Just seeing this kind of defensible residence, built c.1429 with elevated entry, gives you a whole new perspective on castles. It served its purpose for a couple of centuries, and still stands as a testament to Medieval construction - when 20th century structures are often found to be deficient in less than 100 years!

We were driving right by the 'castle' so it was an easy opportunity to stop and take a photo and read the info board nearby about the pirate queen of the area was very interesting. With a ruin around every corner in Ireland, it was just another one of them.

Achill Island is beautiful and yet a haunting place of times gone by. Specifically, Slievemore Village where we see the remains of several houses abandoned during the Great Famine. Take the time to really feel the place. Also enjoyed visiting Grace O'Malley's castle and soaking in the various landscapes. We were all glad we had a bus driver and that we weren't at the wheel. Wild roads! . Great lunch stop in Keel at the Beehive Craft & Coffee Shop. Try any of their desserts!!!

Called Granualile's castle, this is worth stopping at and photographing, but not really spending a lot of time at. You can envision several levels of activity in it, but the wood beams and floors have rotted away, so like most castles, it leaves a lot to the imagination.

Cool little “castle” more like a turret. Has some nice history boards just down the road, talking about the pirate queen. Lovely drive. Worth a visit.

Do your due diligence and read about Grace O'Malley before you go. Perhaps visit the ruined castle of her family, Aughnanure, as you drive through Galway on your way to Achill (although she was supposedly born out on one of the islands). Marvel at the strong women of history who have, by hook or by crook, made their way in the world in all generations.... Grace O'Malley (I like her Gaelic name better, and am told many young girls carry it even today: Grainne') - a pirate queen who had the audacity to visit with Queen Elizabeth to make a request and spoke with her in Latin.... Veni, vedi, vici....
