As is the case with most Normandy beaches, it's all pebbles here...however it's a spectacular setting, with huge and steep cliffs in the background... windy place though

St.Valery sits between the towering white cliffs and has a long, expansive and pristinely clean beach of pebbles and shells. I retreated to the beach after visiting the WW2 battle positions that surround the town - those places that Scottish soldiers (Black Watch, Cameronians, Gordons and Seaforths) were trying to defend in June 1940. My retreat to the beach was invigorating and relaxing - a far cry from the soldiers’ retreat more than 79 years previously.

Plage de Saint-Valery-en-Caux is the main beach of the town, in the coast of Normandy, in the North of France. We came here in December, so we could not to go to the beach to bath and sunbath. However, from here we could see the very beautiful views of the ocean and surroundings, which are very nice. So, a walk on the sand is very recommendable also in winter. Very nice.

Worth visiting the harbour and beach. Great restaurants! Traditional coastal French town. Quiet. Great view from the pier.

I am adding this review here, but it really could cover multiple spots in St Valery en caux. I visited with my Mother and stepfather. In June 1940 the town was the site of a major battle. 70 percent of the town was destroyed. At the end, thousands of men who were hoping for evacuation (as had happened just up the coast in Dunkirk) were captured. St-Valery-en-caux holds a very special place for the 51st Highlander Division as almost the entire Division was captured or killed here. There are many places to see if you are interested in this particular part of WWII history. We visited from the UK and arrived in Dieppe on the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry. There is about a 30 min drive from Dieppe to St-Valery-en-caux so unless you are happy to catch the bus, it may be worth having a car or someone local who can drive you around. Relevant places to visit besides the beach front is the 51st Highland Division monument, the French Monument and the War Cemetery. You can easily walk to the French and 51st Highlanders monuments from the Center of town, but you need to have good legs as they are situated at the top of cliffs on either side of the town. The cemetery is not far away but also probably best to access via car. Another place with lost of interesting June 1940 relevance is the town hall (in the building called Hotel De Ville). It has a "Scottish room" that has many items on display that have been collected over the years. From poems to uniforms on display as well as commemorative pieces of table ware and plaques. I am not sure how you get access to this room, but if you are visiting St-Valery-en-caux because of the WWII history, look into including it. All up, we did the relevant sights in one day and could have easily have gone back to Dieppe or another town for our sleep. But we spent the night there, and walked along the beach. It is a lovely promenade and I imagine would have a lovely atmosphere on a busy sunny day. But for us it was just as lovely watching the sun set overlooking the water, surrounded by the cliffs, reflecting on a visit to a town linked to a very personal piece of family history.

The beach is clean, but seems to be a bit stony when the tide is not low. The town (just by the beach) is very nice, shops and a market, a pier to walk on, old houses. Picturesque indeed!

A must to sample at Low Water as lots of soft sand is exposed and is very well used .Easy access down a ramp or from promenade; changing huts are available at nominal cost .Most people quite happy to plonk their stuff down on the pebbles and meander down to seashore.
Very popular as nowhere else has such excellent sand for miles around.
Then you can buy usual hot/cold snacks just a few paces from the beach.

I and my friend had a chance to visit Upper Normandy region this July to celebrate National day of France with fire works and the other adventures. And of of them was an ancient train trip from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme/ Le Crotoy. It was interesting and unusual hour for travelers who live in big cities and far from province life
