I actually visited before cherry blossom in Gunma, but they have some early bloom species, and when taken with the statue, the effect is very breathtaking. Other than that, entrance to the temple is free of charge, but to enter the statue, the fee is 300 Yen, where one gets to climb up 146 steps to level 9 and appreciate the surrounding region through the windows. On each level, there are many statues to worship. Take note, no lift inside.
I need to correct some misconception from other reviewers here. There is no Bus 8. You can board bus #13 or #14 from bus stop number 8 on Takasaki station west exit bus bay, both services go via different direction but eventually reach the destination (白衣觀音前) in about the same time. I also have pictures to justify it. If you have time after visiting, can consider walking down the shopping path next to the temple entrance, it will take you about 20 minutes to reach another bus stop (觀音山頂), along the way are more shops that sells local souvenirs (more Daruma), and some restaurants.

The whole Kannonyama area has a number of interesting temples to visit. Given the short time that I had, I only visited the area around this temple and big Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) statue. It is an imposing structure in a pretty park. Paying extra to visit the interior of it is something I would recommend as the view is lovely. While the shops were closed when I was there, it would have been quite bustling at other times of the year, I guess.

Taking the Gurin bus from Stand 8, Takasaki Staion West Exit, I stopped at the Byakui Dai Kannon mae stop about 20 minutes later. It's another 10 minutes walk up a gentle hill on a wide well paced path sided by shops and stalls before reaching the Kannon complex. The surroundings here is definitely properly landscaped, well kempt and serene looking despite this place being in the forested hill. Quite a view!

At the back of the Kannon is a hill fully setup and landscaped with rest areas and shelters for bird watching.

There is a pleasant forested path to the right of the Kannon which leads to a suspension bridge (and a dye centre opposite the ravine), the Doukotsu Kannon cave and Tokumeien garden about 20 minutes walk downhill. These are places well off the beaten track but definitely worth visiting. One can catch the return bus to Takasaki at the T junction about 50m from the cave and Tokumei-en complex.

We went there for a candle festival in August. It was nice but crowded. We had to park very far away and walk. There are lots of steps so if you have mobility issues it will be a problem for you.

A wonderful day in Takasaki. You catch #8 bus from the JR station and it takes you up a winding road to the statue. We were also lucky to experience the Autumn colours on the hills nearby. For 300 yen each, we climbed up to her shoulders and took in the amazing 360 degree views. Then visited the Botanical gardens, crossed a vermillion suspension bridge and walked along until we came to the Dokutsu Cannon where we saw 33 statues of the goddess in a cave. The earth that was removed to make the cave was used to construct an exquisite Japanese garden nearby. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed this day and think more visitors to Japan should include Takasaki in their travels. One word of advice, the bus comes to the statue and cave area only once every 80 minutes, so be sure to time your trip (as the tourist information in the JR station suggested).

You can see Takasaki city in front of top of Kannonyama mountain in all season. But this best season is cherry blossoms in spring. Ohanami(drink with under the cherry) is most popular Japanese event. Your Otyoko(Japan Sake cup) full Sake and cherry blossom dropping your Sake surface. What a wonderful seen.

Walked from takasaki station and back, about 1 hour each way. Pretty straight forward directions, if you stood at the station and faced the statue direction there are 2 bridges that cross the river, I went over the left one and came back the right one. If you take the left bridge have a map with you, it's great wandering the streets looking at all the Bonsai style gardens but the streets are a little confusing and you may end up doubling back. The right bridge is straight forward, just go over the bridge and follow that road till you arrive. The statue area is beautiful and serene, the Autumn colours were just starting and the weather was cold so not many people around, some stunning temples and of course the statue to marvel at. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and encourage the walk, don't just sit on a bus, marvel at the statue then sit on another bus back to your hotel! The tourist information in the station can assist with maps.

Easy parking and then a short walk. When you take the path along the road you have to climb some steps, but in return you get a much better view of the statue. We climbed the statue and the view is worth it. Nothing special, but a fun outing if you are in the city.

You need to take the bus from the train station. You will recognise after 30 minutes that you are at the top of the mountain and can see her head. She is of course bigger than life. Get off the bus when most everyone else does. Walk up the hill (a small hill) and have a look. You can also walk up inside of her for a small fee.
There is great scenery and walks around here. I recommend you make your way to the bridge. Check the map.
