If you go to this "temple" complex for a spiritual experience, you're likely to be disappointed. However, this was actually part of a Buddhist theme park, and as a slice of the history about the Japanese "economic bubble," it's quite incredible.

You can go into all of the buildings at your leisure. It is quite rundown, which is too bad because there are some remarkable sights.

I thought the most compelling was the huge pavilion with more than 1,100 Kannon statues that appear to be nearly exact replicas of those in the revered Sanjusangendo Temple in Kyoto. In Kaga, you can actually walk into this building with your shoes on, take photographs, and marvel at the exquisite statues.

I was on a Kannon pilgrimage when I saw the huge Kannon at Kagaonsen out the train window. When first arriving at this "temple," I was very dismayed by the rundown, dilapidated condition of the place. However, when I learned that it had actually been a theme park and not a religious site, I was thrilled to get a closeup look at it. I thought it was very exciting and definitely plan to return to it.

This is kingdom of trashy, a worn-out place, forgotten, overgrown with weeds, run by two people, and one asks if it ever had its times of glory. It was all meant to be some type of Buddha theme park, perhaps frowned upon by locals as an eccentricity, as so many Daikannon in Japan have been. Some of the buildings are already collapsing and one cannot climb to the top of the statue any more. But do not be put off by that. Go and visit the interior of the Daikannon and carry on walking to the enormous building behind the statue. With windows cracked wide open, one will think this is just an old shed full of pigeons. But inside there is a great Buddhist world diorama, empty of visitors, huge and dark, only lit by some emergency lights. Creepy, colourful, certainly bizarre for any of us who do not understand the history of buddhism. And as you turn around at the end of the diorama, behind the wall there is a wonder of wonders (attention, spoilers!). No less than 1,330 life-size statues of the Thousand Armed Kannon, in the style of Sanjūsangen-dō (Kyoto). Beautiful and shining golden, with all those doors and windows wide open and the dust blowing from outside, one wonders how those two people at the front gate manage to dust that spiky crowd... Perhaps there is indeed a miracle being operated in this temple.

One of the strangest things gs I've seen on my trip to Japan. I was just passing through on my way to Kanazawa when our of nowhere in the town of Kagaonsen there loomed this almighty statue. I just couldn't believe the size of it, 82 feet when I looked ot up online.
The temple itself isn't worth writing too much about and there was no information about it and nobody to ask. It in a shabby condition really, in complete contrast to the enormous statue.
Anyway it depicts the Buddhist Goddess Kannon and symbol of compassion and was built to honour the memory of those who died in the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Is it worth going to? I'm conflicted. The statue is amazing and awesome but the temple and the surrounding area have little to recommend to anyone.
I took a few pictures from the train station which I attach. I took none at the sight as there wasn't much to see

Kannon sama makes you feel in peace when you are there. It’s a place rarely visited. When I was there there was no one, not even at the temple reception.
It's worth being there and visiting that place. it’s wonderful.

We went out of our way to drive up to see this temple. It was a mess in April 2016. Maybe it was under renovation. The buildings were boring and uninspiring. Nothing like Nata Dera Temple which was an amazing temple experience.

We saw this huge statue on out way to Kanazawa from Osaka and I wanted to check it out, there is almost zero information about that temple (when we finally arrived at the station this temple is not on any of the turist materials available which is baffling).
Anyway we went in, it is short walk uphill from the Kagaonsen station, the statue itself is very imposing (73m high) and cool, but the temple complex itsefl? I have never see anything similar, some building have holes in roofs, and the temple was completly deserted (outside 2 guys at the entrance), in the halls behind the statue there were hundreds of statues but almost no light, insides of other buildings were covered in dust.
As I said in the title, it was strange experience, visiting ghost temple, it was even kind of creepy (in a good way), so my rating depends on what you want, if you want to experience something weird it is a good choice (and very quick, as limited express train from Kanazawa takes about 15min), but otherwise skip it.
