“Nice lovely onsen in Kaga”
We did not stay at this hotel/ryokan but came for the onsen in late afternoon. The onsen has an outdoor pool overlooking the sea and one can soak in whilst watching the sun sets. Do bring your own towels or buy it at the vending machine. There are lockers at the front of the reception for shoes and then lockers in the onsen for valuables and clothings. The lounge and changing room area is basic

With a very cheap price (around 450円), this onsen may not be huge, but at least you get a decent natural hot water and can take a bath (even though they dont provide shampoo or soap). After that you should try the cafe in the 2nd floor, there is a delicious parfait!

Nice onsen, not much else to do or see

The public spa (soyu) in Katayamazu is small but nice to visit, it's very modern and has an interesting design. The lake and view of Mt Hakusan is pretty, there were cute ducks in the lake. However there wasn't much to do or see in Katayamazu aside from using the spa. There are other attractions nearby (Snow and Ice museum, rabbit theme park, etc) however the tourist bus does a one-way loop that takes over an hour to complete and only comes every 2 hours, so it's difficult to see more than one attraction without having a car. It's a shame that the bus isn't more frequent because it's very affordable (1,000 yen day pass), allows tourist to access things they would otherwise miss out on, and even has a tour guide announcing things along the way (Japanese only). If you want to see more in a day using the CAN bus service you could but pre-planning around the timetable is essential. FYI Katayamazu Public Spa is stop 26A on the Beach Route. If you're staying in the Kaga area and have time to fill in it's worth a visit, but I preferred nearby onsen towns like Yamanaka which had other activities eg: hiking, seeing the rope bridge and gorge and had more of a lively atmosphere.
