This was the third Medici Villa we’ve had the opportunity to visit , and this one was our favourite so far. In contrast to the other two visits, this time we were fortunate to be led around the property by an enthusiastic bilingual guide who made every effort to answer questions and point out special items of interest in the collection, in English, as we toured the museum. As a result, we gained a much greater appreciation for what we were seeing, than had we had the more standard Medici Villa experience of simply wandering the rooms, not knowing the significance of what we were seeing.( Written explanations are sparse, and solely in Italian.)

Although not many of the furnishings m exhibits and paintings we saw were necessarily original to the house, they were relevant to the periods of occupancy; and interesting to look at for that reason.

We had to leave the museum slightly early because it was closing for lunch, but an hour is I think adequate time to enjoy what the museum has to offer. Afterwards, you can take some time to wander the streets of the Centro of the village, which has numerous placards on display pointing out buildings and other features of historical interest in the village,

We visited this museum on Sept 11, 2022. At first we walked up the driveway and thought it was closed as there's no info as to hours etc. I saw a woman unlocking a door downstairs and asked her if it was open. She made a quick call to a woman who was inside who then met us at the door and gave us a private tour however it was all in Italian which luckily my husband translated for me. Very interesting history.

Tradition says that in this villa duchess Isabella de Medici - both daughter and sister of grand dukes of Tuscany - was murdered in 1576 by her husband (the Roman nobleman Paolo Orsini) for committing adultery.
The tradition is very persistent over time: among others, authors like John Webster and Alexandre Dumas gave it credit.
However this is a legend, fed through centuries by opponents of the Medici family: it was refuted - among others - through a wealthy documentation by the Italian historian Elisabetta Mori (her 2012 book is available only in Italian). But the legend endures, because it feeds the imagination more than the banal truth of duchess' sudden death by disease.
Apart from that, the villa is well-preserved, well restored, and open on fairly extensive schedule (also admission is free).
The predominant feature is undoubtedly the impressive brick staircase that allows to climb to the villa, designed by the Renaissance architect Bernardo Buontalenti. But there are also other reasons to distinguish this from other villas - some of them most famous - belonged to the Medici family, and now all part of a single UNESCO World Heritage Site.
So, it's noteworthy that this villa (such as the Montevettolini one, near Monsummano) was built by Medici dinasty to facilitate hunting parties they organized in the nearby, very large "Padule [swamp] di Fucecchio" (it was common sense then that "in Cerreto Guidi you can go hunting all year round").
This so specialized use determined the villa's decline and abandonment at the shift of the rule on Tuscany from the Medici dynasty to the Lorraine one (1737).
Finally, few years ago, the villa was donated to the Italian State by the last owner. In order to establish it as museum, it has been decorated (this also applies to the Isabella's bed) with furniture other than its, long-lost, own original.
The furniture is however valuable, taken from the deposits of the Museo Bardini in Florence.
The visit takes pleasantly at least an hour. Sadly, the captions at the time of my visit were only in Italian.

This building is not traditional beautiful, it was built as a Hunting Lodge for the Medici Family to spend time away from the City of Florence. However It was designed by the family's favourite architect of the time- Bernardo Buontalenti and has the double staircase he favoured in his designs. Inside they have maintained traditional furnishings and many paintings of the Medici family including the beautiful Isabella- Cosimo 1's only daughter to survive to adulthood. Her serially unfaithful husband having found another women whom he wanted to marry decided to punish her for her infidelity with his cousin, (and do away with the inconvenience of already having a wife!), by having her strangled in their bedroom - and then giving out the ridiculous story that she had slipped and banged her head whilst washing her hair...! Readers interested in this story and other parts of the history of the family should try Isabella de Medici by Caroline Murphy. Local rumour has it that the ghost of the unhappy princess still haunts the house - and to bring this to life they hold regular plays in full costume re-enacting this sorry tale. The area can be reached by bus but it isn't easy -especially the return trip later in the afternoon....!

the mountain and forest of the Montalbano were reserved for the hunting of the Medici family. As they didn't want to go all the way back to the point where they started the hunt, they built several lodges to stay and enjoy the hunt. the one in Cerreto Guidi is a good example of this, showing gorgeous rooms and portraits of the Medici clan. don't forget to take a look at the infamous bed where Isabella was murdered by her husband after being caught in flagrante delicto by her husband.

The Villa Medici at Cerreto Guidi was a hunting lodge as witnessed by the family portraits where dogs are much in evidence, the tapestries depicting hunting scenes, and the fabulous hunting weapons, including muskets, carbines, pistols, and a fine display of hunting knives. In stark contrast, the peaceful atmosphere of the private chapel, and the cloistered garden, along with the fabulous view is a feast for the soul. As for a feast for the body, visit the Ristorante Adriano, a surprisingly superb restaurant for such a small village.

A lovely, peaceful place - you can imagine how important this family were to have this house.

A very relaxed place in which you can see beautiful works of art at your own pace.

Views from here are stunning.

Highly recommend a visit.

In 2013, the famous Medici villa's were added to the UNESCO world heritage list. In preparation for this some 25 of these villa's were perfectly restaured and opened to the public (free entrance!). All of these villa's are decorated with often original furniture and paintings. Most villa's have beautiful gardens. One of the fine examples is situated in the old town of Cerreto Guidi, in the north of Tuscany, some 20 kms from Montecatini Terme.
Every first weekend of July the village organises the event of "La Notte d'Isabella de Medici", with parades, traditional foods en many more activities during which the whole town is dressed-up in nice medieval costumes.
