The clifftop walk is at times dangerously close to the edge and with the uneven ground it’s an accident waiting to happen🤦🏻‍♂️

There are steep and rugged climbs with similar difficult drops - hard work and scary😱

I’m pretty agile and up for most things but this was just not enjoyable and the dam at the end and distant flamingos were just not worth the ‘trip’ 🤦🏻‍♂️

Take my advice and stick to the boardwalk - unless you’re an experienced mountain climber or looking to commit suicide! 🥴

This is a very small nature reserve, very close to the centre of Alvor but leading inland along one of the small streams that feed into the lagoon. We saw white flamingos, storks, terns, swallows and plenty of other birds. This will not sweep you off your feet, but it is a good alternative to a day on the beach...

If you like to walk or even stroll and it is wheelchair accessable this is for you. The boardwalk runs almost the whole of the beach before splitting into a number of different length walks around the rivers salt marshes which is a haven to wild life.

Lovely views of the nature reserve and worth a walk down to this along the boardwalk. Lots of birds to look out for and little detours to see different parts.

Climbed up the rocks at the end of the walkway and there was noone around compared to the very touristy centre! Fun walk and a beautiful view.

As I understand it, Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve refers to the walk up the estuary, as opposed to the boardwalk along the dunes that others note in their reviews (although this too is a great walk and good for birding). Perhaps the 'nature reserve' covers both areas...

Either way, to access the walk that I am reviewing, you simply need to walk along the harbour wall with the water on your left, and past the pavilion/old fish market at the end, and then follow the path along past Restaurante Navegador on your right. If you continue walking along this pavement, enjoying the views of the harbour to your left, you will come to a small fisherman's house at the end, and then there's an incline up to the start of the walk. There is a couple of routes that you can take up, some easier than others (it is a dirt track and there is some loose shingle, so sturdy comfy footwear is recommended!) If you head upwards, you will probably be best to pick out the route that is best suited to your abilities, but none of them are too tasking.

Once you have made your way to the top (and admired the view over the harbour) there are a couple of paths, trodden out through the rough vegetation, that you can take - but I like the one closest to the waterfront the best, as the views are spectacular (also it is the best placed for seabird watching).

Excellent area for nature-spotting - it is very peaceful and relatively undisturbed by humans as you walk away from the town. Sparrows, blackbirds and azure-winged magpies can be spotted on the land-side of the trail, while casting an eye out to the water you may see gulls, waders (such as curlews, oystercatchers, plovers, dunlins) plus herons, egrets and terns.

You can follow the dirt paths along for about 30-40 minutes, depending on your walking speed - it remains relatively obvious which way to go - and then you will come to the dam at the river mouth. The path down to it is a bit of a scramble, so you may wish to give this a miss if you are not very surefooted. However if you make it down, you can then cross over the dam/bridge and get a good view of the river on the other side. On this body of water, during my most recent visit, I was lucky enough to see a huge flock of flamingos! A great birding treat and quite rare to see these occasional visitors, according to the locals I told. Fellow birding couple I met on my travels also noted seeing a spoonbill here to.

You can make it to the dam and back to Alvor town easily within 2 hours, but I would recommend taking your time and enjoying to nature and serenity of your surroundings. Only thing to note is that there is little shade on this walk, so I would advise sunscreen and a hat, to protect you from the hot Algarve sunshine.

This is a beautiful walk on a very well-maintained boardwalk along the estuary with interconnected paths starting in town and along the beach. Always interesting to watch the tidal changes and all of the fish and bird life around the estuary. If you are really ambitious you can walk out to the jetty.

A very pleasant and easy walk along the planked paths. . The only problem was we saw very few species of birds. Plenty of sparrows, herring gulls , and egrets and a pair of spoonbills

This is a saltwater lagoon surrounded by the beach and by saltwater marshes. The walk is almost all through elevated boardwalks (so as not to disrupt the environent) covering several kilometers. The boardwalk is well maintained, making for an easy walk.
The day we went, the flamingoes were not present (so we will be back), but there was a lot of birdlife on display
