Disappointing to say the very least. The guide was tired and uninformative. The history of the castle is rich and I’d read a lot about it prior to the visit. For instance this was the final resting place for the Knights of the Templar - not even mentioned. Instead we saw a dollhouse from the 1920s and other irrelevant oddities placed throughout irrelevant to the period. This castle has so much potential but this tour is very much a waste of time.

8€ entry to see nothing. The only interesting view is from outside and it’s for free. The guide speaks only german and is very unwelcoming and unpolite. Don’t waste your time with this improvised business.

Had a nice afternoon here with an interesting tour of the Castle. The history of the place was well explained by the guide (Obviously the reviewer from Kansas wasn't listening or has no idea of European History). Had a nice relaxing time outside the restaurant afterwards. Highly recommended to anyone interested in history. If you aren't...….

We took the train to Oberlahnstein, then walked to the castle, took us about 30 minutes, is pretty much all uphill, and very strenous, especially as you get closer to the castle. There is a cafe right next to the castle, which serves the best waffles we ever had. You must tour the castle as part of an organized tour, which happen on the hour. Tour is given in German, but an English translation guide is available and very helpful. There is a very interesting, yet sad story about a British tourist who died on the tour about 130 years ago. We were staying in Braubach, and were able to tour this castle in the early afternoon, and still have time to tour Marksburg Castle at 4pm.

This is the castle where 12 last Templars sought for refuge. They were attacked by overwhelming power by the local bishop and fought to the bitter end. Apparently the attackers were so impressed by the bravery that they were about to let the last defender go. However, he cut the head of the bishop and they both fell in to the mouth for their death........

A beautifully run and stunningly beautiful location.
the pool is amazing and quite state of the art.
the local attractions are outstanding, with so many local castles it was difficult to choose where to go first.
Showers and restaurant where well kept and run.
the owners were lovely and will definitely be returning to further explore the area and do the river trip and eat more ice-cream.
Totally sorted rating 9 out of 10.

This rebuilt castle comes near the end of the large number of castles in the Rhine Gorge. It has a nice setting above the city of Lahnstein and apparently the adjacent restaurant is good. However the castle lacks authenticity because it has been hugely rebuilt and some additions were probably not even there initially. There is also a large number of furnishings, while antiques in their own right, that do not have anything to do with the castle. So the visitor sees all kinds of furniture styles, paintings etc. from different countries dating from 1500 to 1900 that have no real relationship to the castle. (OK there is a dollhouse owned by one of granddaughters of the English engineer who supervised the rebuilding in the mid-1800s and a painting of Queen Victoria which originally hung in the castle). So enjoy the views of the river valley (Lahn & Rhine rivers) and try to imagine what the castle looked like in it's early history.

My husband and I visited this attraction today in our 6 metre motorhome. There was parking at the top of hill which said no motorhomes so we drove down a narrow tarmac road with traffic signs and parked on a patch of ground outside entrance. Well off road. The tour was very good and although in German we were provided with written guide. The restaurant appeared expensive and lacked variety.
During our tour our group was interrupted by a man asking who owned motorhome. He told us vehicles were not allowed down lane although there was one outside restaurant and that when tour ended we must "get out immediately" and that a photograph of our motorhome had been taken and the matter might be taken further. Good customer relations I think not. This beautiful castle is obviously not intended to be visited by the likes of us with motorhomes. What a shame

We only stayed for one night but the facilities were clean and tidy, possibly requiring some modernisation but it all adds to the charm.
Fresh bread/croissant available in the morning.
Without the location this would be an average campsite, but the views make it special.

This is one of the more interesting castles we have visited in Germany. There isn't much information available about tour times. We basically showed up and were lucky to get a spot--cannot reserve in advance. Our tour guide graciously let us bring our dog in with us, although he was verboten from a couple rooms. It's not the most well kept castle, but I think that's what I found interesting about it. The grounds are beautiful.
Beware the restaurant knows nothing about castle operations so don't bother asking. There's a sign at the gate announcing the next available tour. Be there promptly or you'll get locked out. Seriously. Gates are kept locked and they lock them again once everyone in line has paid and you'll have to wait an hour for the next tour.
No English tour available but we were lucky that our guide DID speak English and she was able to give us quite a few highlights about the castle. We really enjoyed it!
