This place was really neat, better than I expected. My daughter loved seeing all the rooms and getting to imagine what life was like when the house was originally built.

It's a very beautiful town on the border of Germany among tiny hills. Has also got a mountainous little river as well. This also has got a glass factory where one can see the glass making, can also buy the handmade decorative items and so on. We had also enjoyed the spaghetti 🍝 ice cream which was so heavenly delicious.

If you enjoy touring historic homes, envisioning yourself among the centuries-old furnishings, and learning about how the residents lived, you'll enjoy this house museum. Well-written, informative materials were available in several languages, including English, and the interiors were lovely. Several rooms were devoted to the textile trade, which was how the original residents gained their fortune, but I'll admit I skimmed through those. The views through the windows of the town were almost worth the price of admission themselves!

The red house in the middle of the old town is very big and impressive. The rooms are surprisingly large and the people in the portraits are smiling. The pattern books and the history of wool manufacture are very interesting and well presented with some interactive tools. Imagine you could order from more than 2400 different patterns. Entrance fee is 5 euro.

According to the sign at the door, the #1 attraction on my pamphlet, the Red House, was mostly closed, except for Tuesday, the day of our departure from Monschau. So, instead of leaving early on Tuesday, we planned a late breakfast and a visit to the Red House before starting our trip home. When we arrived at the door, the Red House was indeed open, but we were abruptly and dismissively turned away as unimportant "common" people who did not deserve the regard and care that the "distinguished" members of the press on location were receiving. The tall pompous man standing by the door did not bother to address me, a petit female; he condescendingly said 2 words to my equally tall male companion. He was obiously oblivious to my reach as an international teacher with daily internet contacts from Japan to Brazil to the United States and everywhere in between. That said, we met very kind, fun, "down-to-earth, polite business owners in Monschau. I erroneously thought we saved the best for last.

It was good to learn about the history of this 18th century mansion and the local wealthy family of textile producers who made it their fancy homestead.
Second half of May when we attempted to visit the building, going inside was not an option due to the on-going pandemic restrictions. We were able to see it from the outside and use the information provided. We were lucky to to be with a local friend who gave us "a virtual tour''.

This red house is situated in the middle of the village. You pay a small entrance fee. The museum is nice but 30 minutes is long enough to stay

The Red House was built in 1752 as a residential and business house by the cloth maker and businessman, Johann Heinrich Scheibler. Even today, it reflects the lustre of large-scale, upper middle-class living in a rare unity with its complete furnishings in the Rococo, Louis XVI and Empire styles.
The self-supporting, winding staircase built of oak with 21 putto scenes depicts the different phases of cloth making and spans three floors.
Very lovely visit if you are in Monschau, entrance fee is only 3 euro.

An interesting insight into a family life from 1700 -1800 during Monschau’s textile era. Beautifully presented rooms with unique artefacts that are genuine to the house. Children enter free.
A self guided written tour is available in English although we would have enjoyed a clearer route and more detail on the Textile industry and its history. There was a clue in the amazing pattern books on display and really examine the oak staircase which is a masterpiece.

This is a very interesting building to visit in Monschau. Built in 1760 by a cloth merchant the house has interesting furnishings and architecture. The oak stair case is particularly impressive. The rooms are full of interesting objects - not much in English to help you know what you are seeing but it is well worth a visit. Not expensive at 5 euros an adult and children free.
