Monza's Skycraper.
Jul 2019
The cathedral of Monza, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries and is located in the square of the same name in the Lombard city of Monza. It has the dignity of a minor basilica.
At this moment, the cathedral is being restored at the outside, but you can still go inside and admire tha interior.
Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.

A place for worship and awe
Sep 2018 • Pasangan
We had come to Monza just with the idea of visiting the Autodromo Nazionale but liked the city so much that we stayed on and had the pleasure of entering the Duomo. It is an architectural marvel where you can admire the wonderful altar and religious icons of the Catholic Church. In one of the photos is Santa Rita, patrón of our hometown, Brandsen in the province of Buenos Aires.

Well worth the climb

Well worth the climb to the very top of the roof for the views but found the staff very unhelpful especially at lift going down.

Beautiful church, well-designed museum, useless tour if you don't speak Italian
Des 2018 • Pasangan
The interior of the church is impressive, and the museum is informative and attractive with enough signage in English to understand the significance of the artifacts and art. (The church front is under renovation so cannot be seen.) The chapel with the iron crown has beautiful frescoes. I believe they tell the history of the city-state and church.

The chapel and iron crown tour rates only one star, however. The woman at the desk selling tickets spoke some English and told us that there "might" not be any English on the tour but that we would be given a card in English that would describe the chapel and crown. However, it turned out that she was the one who gave the tour, there was absolutely no English spoken, and we were not given a card or anything else with explanations in English. On the way out, she handed us a pamphlet in Italian. Also, the crown is suspended about 12 feet above the ground behind a curtain. The curtain is drawn back with some drama. It is too far off to get a good look at. Binoculars would be required. Fortunately, there is a copy of the crown that can be seen close-up in the museum.

A nice Duomo
Feb 2018 • Teman
The Duomo was built in a really elegant Gothic style in the 14th century, but was later refurbished, especially the interior paintings and decorations, in the Baroque way.
It is intersting to note that this Duomo is not a Cathedral as it doesn´t have a Bishop´s seat as it is still under the diocesis of Milan.
Furthemore the Duomo used to have a ceremonial armed guard, similar to the Papal swiss guard, known as the Alabardieri of the Duomo, that served the Cathedral of Monza (a rare privilige).

We loved so much the Duomo in Monza last year, that we came back this year to see it again. Unfortunately for the visitors, this year, the facade is totally covered because of the restoration works. But, of course, it is good for the future life of the Duomo!
Apart from the inside of the cathedral (which is absolutely impressive), this year we took the tour of Teodolinda's Chapel and the Iron Crown. It really worth!
The tour was in Italian, because the majority of the visitors was Italian, but it was ok because we understand a little Italian and, from time to time, the guide gave us several resumes in English.

A plot of events spanning more than 1400 years, a complex and monumental architecture, rich decorations and furnishings, a treasure of inestimable value and a dense network of international relations marked on the arc of its history, make the Monza Cathedral one of the most important ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and Europe.

Importance which the basilica seems to have been intended from the beginning, which lie in the difficult years of the first organization of the Lombard kingdom in Italy and bind to the figure of the Queen Theodolinda (approximately 570 - 627), princess bavara Catholic, went married, in succession, to the two kings of the Lombards: Autari (in 589-90) and Agilulfo (590-616).
