It's fascinating to see male genitals depicted in such a passive way--they are "picked" from a tree and don't have much agency. This is also a great place to covertly conceive a child.

Very curious this large fresco inside the palace of warehouse of abundance.
The palace was built in 1265 by the mayor Idebrando from Pisa,
The only visible fresco is called the Tree of Fertility and is characterized by 25 men genitals ,
usually in those years the frescoes of naked men were always covered in the parts of the genitals, but here they are clearly visible

Beneath the Palazzo dell'Abbondanza, which used to be used as a granary for Massa Marittima, are the vaults of a very large public fountain which dates from the 1265. The fountain is located in Via Ximenes, a short way down the hill away from the Duomo and towards one of the paid car parks. The facade of the fountain has three large archways which also separate the three different water basins that were being used - the first for drinking water, the second for domestic activities and the third for livestock.
In the years just prior to 2000, the city restored the natural spring waters such that water again flowed into the fountain and during this process discovered against the wall at the back of the basin used for drinking water, a very large (measuring five metres by six metres) and unusual 13th century fresco which is called the "Albero della Fecondita" or the "Tree of Fertility". The fresco shows 25 sets of male genitalia hanging like large pieces of fruit amongst the leaves on the branches of a tree. There is also four large blue birds just above the heads of a colourfully dressed group of women who appear to be waiting underneath the branches of the tree to catch any falling genitalia and place them in the bag they are carrying.
Very unusual and there appears to be no one version of what the fresco might mean.

Funny tree in the old town of Massa Marittima. Also the description sign is funny because they do not use the word ’penis’

OK - this one is a bit odd, especially as a decoration on an old civic building in a Medieval Italian hill town. Clearly about 'fertility' at some level. A good photo to pass onto (adult) friends....

Having a walk across Massa Marittima you may find some strange souvenirs and cards with the tree, on which penises grow. The original fresca with this tree was discovered in the year 2000 during the restauration the old fountain, known as "Fonte nuovo" since 1265. It was hidden under the layers of plastering. In total, there are 25 erected falos on the tree, 5 black birds, 2 women are fighting for "fruits", another one is really satisfied with the "proper" usage of the "fruit". There are many other intresting details but better come and see it yourself.

This is a really unique fresco. You don't see anything special at first but if you take a closer look at the "fruits" and find out what it is about it will definitely put a smile on your face :)

When this was first discovered and uncovered a few years ago - this fresco was subtle and surprising! The recent 'restoration' has ruined it - makes it look like a cartoon! Worth a look whilst in Massa but now bears little semblance to the original - which is a shame!

This is a fresco that one needs to see! I won't go into any details, but when in the area, make a trip to Massa Marittima. The fresco is especially lovely at night when it's lit and there is the sound and reflection of water (which doesn't exist).

Well, it IS called the Fountain of Abundance! It is in a location that is hard to miss as you walk around Massa Maritimma. In fact, our host for the hotel we were staying in, Enrico Franco, told us this location saved Massa Marittima because of the natural spring that was once here, and a storehouse of food, during the frequent wars between ancient Italian cities, as he carried our luggage for us from the city parking lot.
