During a scenic drive of the Manche, this is a lovely coastal fishing village the church, Église Notre-Dame, adds to the romantic feel of the village, hardly anyone around, nice to visit.

No sure where "slightly touristy village" went but it wasn't Portbail. Market day is Tuesday and has been for the last 20 years, Monday is Briquebec. This is a very special town in a unique position with good restaurants and events throughout the summer months. June is especially moving as 1944 was so important to Portbail. Learn a little French and you will be served well in this little gem of Normandy

Lovely place to visit, we went to an exhibition in the old church of modern paintings, wondered around and also went to the church where the stained glass windows were modern and exceptional.

There is an impressive natural harbour to visit with mud flats and a long bridge. The town is pleasant but best go on market day which is on a Monday but check beforehand as it seems to be variable. There is fresh produce and also live rabbits and guinea pigs together with a small number of cafes. I visited a couple of wine merchants but the prices were high seemingly reflecting tourist purchases. The small church next to the market is unremarkable. In the centre of the market just off the main road at a junction is an excellent baker with delicious light sweet pastries. I might add that the town also has a fantastic and memorable liberation parade each year and again you will have to check the date. A pleasant village to visit for a half day.

We visited during half term and were staying at a holiday park a little bit up the coast. I had read that when the tide goes out there are some great rock pools - and this was indeed the case!!
A vast expanse of beach and rock pools galore. My young girls loved adventuring in to them and we found so much sea life in them, an abundance of crabs! And what’s more the water is so warm so makes it ideal for paddling and even swimming in some of the deeper ones.
We spent the whole afternoon there and really had a great time!

Great walk out over the bridge (13 arches) to the beach. Nice view of the deterioriating shipwreck and boats anchored (or beached). A very nice bar is found at the habour. Beach is stunning.

Beside the shipwreck there is not that much to see. This is typical small harbour with mainly fishing boats and a few sailing vessels.

Portbail is always busy, good restaurants from pizzerias to fine dining. Tuesday market is a must with stalls selling fresh fish, vegetables/fruit and souvenirs. When tide is in the seashore is impressive with water flowing strongly under the causeway. When tide is out the dunes and estuary are great for walking whatever the weather. Portbail harbour is small, with a marina and restaurant.

Oh how I love it. The lovely sand dunes, the superb empty sandy beaches, the magnificent views, the sea, the harbour: wonderful. No matter the type of weather visiting here always lifts my spirits. Most certainly a beautiful area and wholly unspoilt.
