Hot springs and Geysers Galore

One of my favorite spots in the park. The geothermal activity is everywhere and the colors within the structural formations are amazing. So much to see and easy access right off the grand loop road.

One of the most unique places I’ve ever been

There’s a lot more than just “Old Faithful” at Upper Geyser basin, which is a good thing if you miss an eruption and don’t want to wait for the next one. That’s what happened to us. We parked our car JUST as an Old Faithful eruption occurred. We could see the water above the trees and knew we missed it. But there are SO many other awesome things to see at Upper Geyser Basin. Multiple “Visitor Center” type facilities aside, there are plenty of trails with smaller geysers and colorful bubbling pools. When I say “trails,” I don’t mean your typical dirt hiking trail either. Yellowstone has plenty of those too, but the trails around Upper Geyser Basin are either paved or on wooden platforms. Many (if not most) are even handicap accessible! Like many of the incredible attractions at Yellowstone, the geysers and bubbling pools at Upper Geyser Basin are beautifully otherworldly.

An easy walk allows you to see many geysers, and you can make it as long or as short as you want.

The many cutover points over the Firehole River, especially near Old Faithful, make it very easy to either have a short walk on the boardwalk, a medium one or a hike of several hours. There is a uniqueness to each of the sights along the way to make it a very worthwhile way to spend two hours or more.

Geysers everywhere!
Sep 2020
This is a long winding trail system along the way you see tons of geysers. It was so large of an area that it feels like you are on a desalt foreign planet. At one point we walked thru the steam of a geyser that was blowing over the trail. It might not have been healthy but we lived and it makes for a cool story.

Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Upper Geyser Basin. Very cold that day but worth the extra effort to visit.

Yellowstone MUST!

We spent a day exploring the UGB. We took a seat and patiently waited for Old Faithful. After about thirty minutes I was sure that it wasn’t going to happen and then the assembled, masked, COVID-19 crowd started the wave. Old Faithful woke up and ceremoniously delighted those assembled. Next we decided to walk to Morning Glory Pool and were treated to five (5) additional eruptions and beautiful pools along the Firehole River. We came to see Old Faithful but the other features are the true stars of the show. Four (4) suggestions: 1. Go early and get predictions for eruptions 2. Plan your stops and walk to Morning Glory Pool 3. Go to the Gift Shop/Store while everyone’s waiting for Old Faithful - it gets mobbed just after it erupts 4. Leave you pet at home. It’s a federal offense if your dog wanders off the boardwalk onto the environmentally protected area

Don't ignore the smaller geysers!

Sure, everyone is going to see the big, famous, Postcard geysers, but, honestly, some of the coolest ones are off the popular paths. Take the time to enjoy them all!

Walk the trail and see the vivid colors and depths. Be amazed by the power of water and steam and millions of years.

Way more geysers, springs and geothermal sights than we imagined

So happy we stopped to walk along these fascinating (and sometimes stinky😀) phenomenon. Loved seeing these fascinating things in person. Bigger, louder, and so many more than we imagined. Can't wait to go again one day!

This area defines Yellowstone. There are numerous geysers with varying eruption times that are published. If possible we will go back and stay at the lodge so that we can see the various eruptions. It was not possible due to lodge being closed at end of season. The walk is long but seeing the many pools is worth it.
