One of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Everyone needs to see these majestic trees at least once in their lifetime.
Stout grove is perfect for any age or abilities. This grove is the best in the park. Parking can be tricky in the busy season so go early if you can.

Stout Grove was easily our favorite Grove of the ones we visited on our trip to the Redwoods. It's a great grove for walking for families with little ones. It's a short walk and you're immediately in the middle of colossal redwoods, and ferns. Our kids had a field day climbing and walking on top of downed redwoods, and exploring the forest.
If you can do 1 redwood grove, this is the one to do. Highly recommend.

Located in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, which is part of Redwood National and State Parks, the Stout Memorial Grove trail is a 0.6 mi/.97 km loop that takes you through part of the 44-acre grove of old growth redwoods. My wife and I hiked this trail in late April 2023.
This trail is generally considered to be easy, and we (who are both well into our 60s) would concur. The trail, which is part asphalt and part well-packed dirt, is in good condition, and the most elevation gain you’ll experience is a fairly gentle grade as you walk out of the grove back to the parking lot.
The most challenging element to this trail is probably getting to the trailhead. You have to drive along Howland Hill Road, which is narrow, full of curves and mostly unpaved. NOTE that there is no parking at the trailhead for trailers and RVs.
The hike through the grove is delightful – you’re able to get very close to the redwoods, and even if there are others on the trail, it seems very quiet. I enjoyed the Stout Memorial Grove even more than the better-known Lady Bird Johnson Grove, and I would certainly recommend a visit here.

Was the highlight of my trip by far. We almost didn’t visit here because the kids were tired but I really wanted to see it after having come so far and I’m so glad we did. The kids ended up loving it too. Great little hike with the best of the trees all super close to the parking area and was relatively flat and easy to navigate. If you have limited time during your visit and have to choose where to go this trail should be at the top of your list.

We did several trails in the Redwoods and this one was the favorite for all (kids, aged 4, 8 and 11, adults and Grandma).
There were several areas where the trail crossed the path of downed trees: the kids had a BLAST climbing on them. There were also several Redwood trees on the path with hollowed out trunks: the kids loved exploring the inside of the tree.
While parts of it would be wheelchair or stroller accessible, I wouldn’t want to push one unless it was made for trails (bigger tires/wheels).
Parking was definitely congested. There is a small handicap accessible parking area at the trailhead, with bathrooms (pit toilets); we parked along the road.

One of the oldest of the old growth Redwood groves. Easy in and out, walkable for those who can't hike for hours.

Our family LOVED this grove of trees and the loop trail. We visited on a cool clear day in late November. We came from the North on Route 199 and turned left on to Fork Road, and then found the grove 3 miles down the road. After our hike, we continued on down Howland Hill Road until we arrived at Crescent City. Bathrooms were pretty disgusting/smelly. Beautiful drive and trees!!

I walk with a cane. The entire hike took me about ninety minutes. Other than the slope to/from the parking lot, the trail is mostly flat. There are also plenty of places to sit or lean along the trail. Even the drive from the park entrance to the trail was wonderful. Do not miss this place!

simply amazing, nature at it's best. Wanted to see the Redwoods and had this opportunity. Simply drove to Crescent City, then determined which specific site to visit.

In relation to my previous question ...
How are the roads leading to Stout Grove?
Will a rental mini be ok for the trip?
Traveler20141026

Next week (May 13, 2021) we will drive from Grants Pass to Fortuna, CA. We want to stop at Stout's Grove before continuing on to Crescent City for lunch and the light house.
As I understand from Hwy 199 we will take a left on S. Fork Rd. Then we\
come to a "T" in the road, stay to the right & take Douglas Park Rd. We will then come to another "T" in the road, stay to the right again & this turns into Howland Hills Rd.
Question: from Stout's Grove can we continue on to CC or do we backtrack the way we arrived?

You can go south from Crescent City, where there are a number of cliffs (along the Coastal Trail) from which you can observe the Pacific Ocean. In the right season, people have reported seeing whales not that far from the shore. BUT August isn't a whale migration time so it would be a fluke to see them at that time. Other sea mammals can be seen right from the end of Klamath Beach Road pretty much all year, but not whales. Crescent City has some whale-watching vendors so you might check with them about possibilities.

I can't speak to the whole park, but dogs are not allowed in Stout Grove. There's signage in the parking lot.

Did you take Howland Hill Road and start the hike from there? Also, what is the lastest time of day to start the hike? I/m wondering if mid afternoon is ok.

We drove in from Grants Pass (took Sth Fork rd off the Redwood hwy), not too far in to Stout Grove. We then drove Howland Hill Road into Crescent City in the late afternoon - spectacular drive.
The hike through Stout Grove can be done in under an hour, but better to take longer and have the time to see it all and soak up the majesty of these huge trees. Some storyboards around as well.
How is the whether like in December how what are hours and days of operation.

Ive not been in December but I would imagine it's cold and rainy. You can check the weather in crescent city for a rough idea of what the weather is like there. I would imagine that the hours there are the same all year, sunrise to sunset. However if it has been rainy there I would not recommend going since the 7 miles of narrow road is all dirt roads and would be slick and very uneven and possibly impassable. Better to drive roads like the lady bird johnson grove or avenue of the Giants that time of year which is further south. You would still see the magnificent coastal redwoods but without worry of getting stuck in the mud.

location coming from Oregon , on the 199 as well as Howland hill rd do they cross each other

We came from Oregon also. From 199 you'll take a left on S. Fork Rd. Then you'll come to a "T" in the road, stay to the right & take Douglas Park Rd. You'll come to another "T" in the road, stay to the right again & this turns into Howland Hills Rd. This part of the road as you get closer to Stouts Grove has a lot of very large holes in the road but cars can make it, just watch out for shadows hiding the holes in the road. If you go on through on Howland Hills road past Stouts Grove the road is better, still gravel & dirt, but not as bad with holes. The drive on this road is worth it, beautiful place! Enjoy!

Hwy 199 from Grants Pass Oregon to Crescent City CA. A few miles before Hiouchi. Turn left if coming from Grants Pass on road 427. It goes over the river and then another bridge in like 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Then turn right onto Douglas Park drive. It becomes a dirt road for several miles to the trail head. You can also just go to google maps and type in Stout Grove and it finds it for me.

Can A small RV access the parking?
Mark n Jen D

It depends on your definition of 'small'. If you mean a small van sized type - then maybe yes. A small class b would be a tight fit. The road is dirt, narrow (as in one lane) and winding. It would also be a slow go as the road may have ruts and pot holes! It's beautiful though - so if you are fearless and adventuresome (or have another way to get in there) don't miss it. :)

What would be the best plan for driving to the San Francisco Airport, how much time etc... We have two days and need to be at the airport to turn in a car no later than 10:00am ?

Starting at Stout Grove? I'd aim to get to SF the night before.
This is a drive to do in the day light to see the sights. I'd spend one day leisurely driving down the coast then once dark just power through the rest to SF. I'd stay the night closer to the bay area to get to sfo by 10am. If you're not a great night driver, scrap this plan. don't drive tired!
