Best snorkeling this trip
Feb 2021
The water was perfect, we went early and avoided any crowds, paid the $5 parking for easy parking. The water was crystal clear, so many varieties of fish, beautiful snorkel day. Sadly did not see the dolphins that sometime frequent the area.

Guidelines for enjoying this beautiful marine preserve
Des 2020
Guidelines for Enjoyment and Safety at Two Step ~Parking along the shore is very limited. Drive slowly. ~Kapuwai, the small sandy area with shallow waters to the far left of the lava rocks, is good for children and beginning snorkelers, but be aware of boats ~Please enter the water only at Pae’e, or Two Step. Two Step is located roughly in the centre of the lava shoreline. Walk only on bare rock, not algae. If you are new, ask others and watch how the experienced swimmers enter and exit the water. Wait your turn and move quickly away from the steps. Be safe, avoid injuries, and ask others who may need help if you can lend a hand. Use only reef safe sunscreen. Touching the coral with your dive equipment or hands damages it and can cut you. Some of the coral here is estimated to be 1000 years old. Let marine life come to you--don’t chase them. Create an enjoyable experience for both you and our protected marine life, including fish. Observe from the surface. Feeding them, swimming or diving toward them may disturb their sleeping, feeding or mating times and puts their future at risk. NOAA guidelines for safe distances to keep Nai’a (dolphins) 50 yards Honu (turtle) 50 yards Kohala (whales) 100 yards Respect the aina (land) and the community who live here. Please take your litter home with you. Thank you for your help in keeping the Aloha. Enjoy the wonder. Mahalo nui loa.

Two step for snorkeling
Jan 2021
Also known as Two Step. There is a $5 paid parking lot along with limited free street parking. One walks about 100 feet on black lava to the end where there are two steeps into the water. Depending upon the tide and waves, it can be easy or hard to get from the water back to land. There is some coral and lots of fish in the water. I like Kahaluu Beach park better for snorkeling.

The bay is closed on Tuesdays
Feb 2020
unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to swim in the bay. The whole bay is closed off from the highway for weekly maintenance on Tuesdays. We will try and get back next time

Best snorkeling spot on the Big Island
Feb 2020
From my experience, Two Step was the best place to snorkel on the Big Island. Even better than Kealakakua Bay which is saying something. Get there early unless you want to pay $5 to park in a private lot or park far away on the road accessing the nearby Place of Refuge National Park. The water had some surge and there was maybe a 1 foot wave near the steps into the water. Getting in and out was pretty easy though unnerving the first time as I didn't know how deep it was and didn't want to hit any coral. Once in the water there were so many schools of fish to look at and the water was crystal clear. Due to the parking situation, there weren't as many people in the water which was nice for us. Definitely recommend this awesome snorkel spot. My young kids weren't ready for the water here but my teenage nephews and nieces loved it. Also saw some scuba divers getting suited up nearby.

Primitive but beautiful.
Feb 2020
The lava provides great cover for underwater life. People are perched all over the rocks as they snorkel the area in search of beauty. It's a difficult area to park around with people selling all kinds of things but it makes for fun scenery. You can see the fish just standing on the side swimming around without going in the water, but if you are a die hard snorkeler, this is a favorite spot. It's next door to Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. You have to pay to go into the park, but we purchased a National Parks pass so we were able to go in and enjoy the site with no additional charge. You have to respect the sacred space that the Park provides and not encroach on the serenity it evokes.

Definitely a must for Snorkeling and even Scuba Diving.
Sep 2019
Great area to see and an easy drive. The walk to the bay is really nice as well - short and a walk through the open jungle. We try to go there almost every time we go to Maui - We are blessed as we go 3 to 2 times a year and sometimes more! The fish tend to be a little larger here and you may get lucky and see some really large fish - they tend to come into the bay to take a break. One time we seen a really large school of fish just swimming around in circles - so beautiful. Turtles - of course! NOTE: You may hear the tours talk about "Turtle Town" - The tours all have their places, there is not just one "Turtle Town." Don't fall for the pull - the turtles are all over. It can be a little hard to get into the water - so go slow and be careful of the slippery rocks. Many tourist Boat rides come and here during the day, serve lunch and park for snorkeling. Always a good and fun trip to take. If it is raining there - do go - the water pours down from the mountains and clouds the waters brown really bad, but still worth the walk in to the bay if the rains have stopped - may be a little muddy too.

This place is beautiful. You may see spinner dolphins dancing out of the water, you can snorkel, swim, kayak, or just relax and take it all in.
