Wonderful Education Regarding Early Hawaii
Feb 2021
Beautiful totems, and fascinating history. A sacred space not to be missed. Lots of little goats running around while we were there. I was delighted.

Wow - Loved It
Feb 2021 • Pasangan
This national park ($20) was so cool to visit. A place of refuge, what an interesting concept. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk around the ruins, appreciating the carved statues, gazing into the waters where hundreds of yellow tang were hanging out. Not a place to snorkel or sun bathe - says it’s prohibited, but, no worries, just go next door to Two Step. Fascinating place and for sure worth a visit

Learn about old style Refuge.
Jan 2021
While the park's brochure is informative, the map of the guide trail is misleading (items 4 and 5 are across from 3 (not farther down the trail). The trail has several rocky places, so not an easy walk.
Interesting to see yellow fish in the waves close to shore.

The Place of Refuge
Okt 2020
A calmness overtakes one in this place where the hunted could go for sanctuary. Not an easy trek either (thank goodness for cars). Information signs are all over and the docent we met answered all our questions and added more history and context to the place and its various areas.
We spent hours here and could have stayed longer but for the rumblings of our tummies. It’s a perfect spot for families to visit – for anyone to visit. Do take the time to visit. You will not be disappointed in what you see and learn.

Important Native Hawaiian historical place
Des 2020 • Pasangan
Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park preserves an important cultural place for Native Hawaiians and is a must see for anyone visiting the Big Island :)). Stroll along the trails here, view the restored structures, and learn about why it’s known as the Place of Refuge (fascinating history indeed). There’s a small sandy beach where honu turtles can often be found sunning themselves between feeding sessions... note how the tall stone walls here are artfully constructed without any mortar between the carefully placed rocks. Enjoy!

Beautiful National Park
Jan 2021 • Sendiri
Spent a couple hours walking through the park. There’s a $20 entrance fee. Clean restrooms and a water fountain to fill up bottles with cold filtered water. With Covid restrictions the store was closed as well as the ranger talk. The park is oceanfront and beautiful. I went in the afternoon and it wasn’t too crowded. So peaceful. I followed the map given to be me at the entrance. Some other tourists listened to a cell phone app. Very interesting to read about the ancient Hawaiian culture.

Easy, Quick place to check out
Jan 2020 • Keluarga
It’s about 40 minutes south of Kona, get gas and pack snacks/water before you go there isn’t much outside of Kona. It was a cool historical site to check out. They have a gift shop and restrooms. There isn’t a ton to do here. It’s a quick low impact walk around the grounds. We were here for about 45 minutes then headed down to Punalu u Black Sand Beach. It was great to see and learn about the Hawaiian culture.

Amazing
Jan 2020
Having never visited The City of Refuge, it was my first stop on a trip to the Big Island. I had only seen pictures. This place was amazing. The purpose of it's establishment, the history of the place was/is fascinating. To use a local term ,it gave me "chicken skin" (goosebumps) walking around the grounds.

Hi Rob Can you tell me where you rented the kayak? I am interested in doing it that way but don't want to do an organized kayak tour. Thanks

Hi
Our cruise ship is at Kailua Kona for one day - is the park easy to get to ? Could we make our own way there ?
Thanks

Sorry, just saw this - we took a Roberts tour. One issue is the port requires a tender so you need to be sure you have plenty of time to make the return tender. We thought the site was well worth the cost and time of the tour even though the tour guide and coffee plantation stop were not. There is also a stop at a painted church - tour (Roberts or other) is probably much cheaper than cab. Rental car is an option, but the tender issue complicates that.

HI! I understand that you can have a talk by a ranger. Is that correct ? At what time does this take place? Mahalo Laura

We attended two Ranger talks mid morning, and close to noon. Ask the exact times upon entering the park. Both very informative, highly recommended. One is in the covered pavilion, and the other is a walking tour of the park.

Do we have to purchase a tour?

No tour necessary, though I'm sure there are folks hoping to charge you. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau it is an easy drive from Kona, and it is a National Park, so other than a modest entrance fee, no other costs. Once in Park Rangers give great interpretive talks and answer questions, and the area is small enough to fully explore on your own without concern for getting lost.

The park does provide big bubble tired wheel chairs designed to safely and effectively wheel across the sand. I am not sure if it is possible to reserve them in advance but the last several times I've been in the park I have seen the wheel chairs not being used but available.

Is there food available for purchase at this beach?

All they have is a small gift shop and bathrooms. A short distance down the beach is an area for snorkeling that may have snacks. Most people eat off of Mamalahoa Highway. We ate an authentic lunch at Kaaloa's Super J's in Captain Cook, Hawaii and had chicken lau lau. Small cafe...counter service...4 or 5 tables but good food. Well rated by yelp.
