I definitely support the concept of an LGBT art space, but the day I went the expo was just a mishmash of installations without any obvious unifying idea. And while some pieces were OK, most were forgettable and not well-made. Ho hum. We need quality.

I went to the Leslie-Lohman Museum for the second half of the "Art After Stonewall" exhibition that they shared with the Grey Gallery at NYU. It is more of a gallery space than a true museum but still they did a nice job mounting the exhibition.
The art is mostly from the 70's and early 80's and deals with the sexual revolution and the AIDS crisis. There was a lot of controversial Lesbian art in the exhibition that I would not recommend to small kids unless they have a Gay parent who can explain it to them.
Outside that, I think that the curators did a nice job of continuing the exhibit and I liked a lot of Keith Waring art. It is nice because you can see the whole gallery in about an hour and a half.

Two really important exhibits currently running at the the Leslie-Lohman Musieum: "Beautiful, Brave Outlaws: The Photographs ofDonna Gottschalk and "Male Gaz: Life, Legend, Legacy, 50 years of Leslie-Lohman.
Both shows (very different) are inspiring, moving and a vital part of our history!!!
Go see these shows and more importantly, go support this vital queer museum!!

The museum is not large, but definitely puts the space to its best use. The Venable exhibit was fascinating, and along with the art were excellent explanations and context, which were helpful as someone not familiar with his work. The photography exhibit was also excellent. The staff were absolutely lovely, and clearly so enthusiastic about their work and the museum itself. This was a quick stop, but so valuable.

Didn't know this was there, but Google Maps had it as a landmark near our hotel so we checked it out and glad we did! Only $9 to get in ("suggested" donation) and it took us about an hour to see everything on display in 2 large galleries. Great historical documentation here of the fights the community went thru to get the level of acceptance they have today, with amazing exhibits including the work of Warhol and others

Very important collection of gay/queen art in a lovely Soho expo space. Dedicated staff to help you. Great youth programs. Some pieces are absolutely brilliant. Good for a short fun visit.

When we went here. the place was practically empty. it was okay. lots of history in it. even though we werent part of the lgbt community. but their exhibit was actually interesting . looking at the past in their eyes was really mind opening

This museum was very low-key, but it was a nice experience. There's a really nice mix of art and history within the building. It was extremely quiet and clean. There was a variety of art; this museum is definitely worth your time.
