Make a day out of it
Apr 2021
This gem, tucked away under scaffolding along museum row, is right across from the Central Park tranquility garden and right next to the Museum of the City of New York (also reviewed). First, you should know that if you visit one of these museums, both of which are great, you get free same day admission to the other. So great value and would make a wonderful day out. You could visit both the museums, walk along Central Park, grab a bite from a local street vendor. And all very affordable or free! This museum focuses on Latinx artists. The current exhibition is “La Trienial 20/21.” The art often focuses on Latinx issues, ICE/deportation, poverty, loss of culture, assimilation. COVID is featured here as well. Also a lot of queer/LGBTQIA art. So much color, so visually stimulating. Each piece is bursting with important messages, so relevant to our complicated existence in the 2020s and beyond. The space is well curated, open, full of light. Exhibits are easy to view and not too crowded. Not overwhelming. Each plaque is in English and Spanish. Not too much info, but just enough to introduce the artist and to enhance your understanding of what’s in front of you. Down the hall to the right of the main event space is a stunning segue that has tile and mosaics that are over 100 years old. This leads to a light filled space with unique windows along the back wall. The exhibits here were some of my favorites. One was a digital exhibit (video, spoken word, print) all about technology and how it is biased/racist/capitalistic. I stood and watched for a very long time, and had to tear myself away. The staff are all very helpful. Another small museum that I love and will return to over and over.

Collection of mostly Hispanic-themed local artists' work
Mei 2021
The El Museo del Bario is a collection of mostly Hispanic-themed local artists' modern art work. There's no real sense of what might have produced by vaious generations of artists in what's now Spanish Harlem or other Hispanic neighborhoods (which is what most art museums might have done), just what's ben done in the recent years.

On the postive side, admissions is free if you've purchased a ticket at the adjacent (and much better) Museum of the City of New York. So I'd visit the Museo del Bario only if you've gotten a free ticket and had already visited the NYC Museum next door.

Aprende mas 65+ - New senior program at Museo del Barrio
Feb 2019 • Sendiri
I showed up this morning at El Museo for this free public tour for seniors. Perhaps it was the forecast of snow, but I was the only one there for this new program! That's a shame, because my two young museum guides (one from Peru, the other from Mexico) for the Liliana Porter exhibit were excellent and helped me see things I would not otherwise have noticed. (Two French women joined us later, one of whom was definitely not senior.) We toggled between Spanish and English with some French. These programs will be offered one Wednesday a month; there are also monthly afternoon art-making sessions for seniors. El Museo is working hard at outreach, so I hope more people will take advantage. There is a cafe on premises as well as a gift shop. See elmuseo.org for details.

Interesting small museum with unique shows
Sep 2017 • Sendiri
I had never been to El Museo del Barrio even though I go to the Museum of the City of New York next door all the time and have been a member for years.

I went to see a exhibition by a Cuban graphic artist that I had read about in the Village Voice and the exhibit really packed a punch. It was really interesting about an religious sect from Africa that had been transported with slavery to the island of Cuba and had taken root in the island amongst it citizens. She honored the group with the artwork which was respectful and fascinating. It was very different from some of the other exhibitions I had seen recently.

It is a small museum and you can see all the displays within two hours. It is not that big of a place. It does have a theater attached to it and a very nice café and bar at the other end of the hallway as well as a gift shop. Everyone here is really nice and if you like Spanish art, this is an interesting place to visit.

While here, make sure to stop at the Central Park Conservatory across the street and the Museum of the City of New York next door as well as the Harlem Meer. Since you can get through everything here in about an hour and a half, check out the other sites while uptown but don't miss this little 'gem'.

Growing Museum with art from Latinoamerican artists!
Des 2016 • Teman
When I visited this museum it was under construction, so I was only able to see about 1/3 of the space. The display that day was mostly a videography project from a Puerto Rican artist, and a section for artwork developed by their artist in residence. The videos were interesting, but the exhibit took us about 30 minutes to see. We didn't stay to watch all of the videos, but I wish I had. There were some very interesting topics ranging from Haitian cultural beliefs to the military occupation and desertion of Vieques. I'm looking forward to visiting once the museum is fully renovated and there are many more interesting pieces to explore.

My son needed to visit this museum for Spanish class. We decided to take the whole family. We never expected to like it. The museum is small. We finished in about an hour. My son actually liked the art work on display. It was a good way to spend the afternoon.

Contemporary art by Latinamerican artists
Agt 2016 • Pasangan
El Museo is a place where you can go and see what latinamerican artists are doing in the world of contemporary art. Make sure to check their website for times and exhibits. Usually, admission to the Museum of the City of New York will also get you into El Museo del Barrio, and vice-versa.

Puerto Rican Pieta and Antonio Lopez -- Future Funk Fashion exhibit blew me away
Agt 2016 • Sendiri
I wasn't sure I'd enjoy the in-depth exhibit on the work and life of fashion illustrator, Antonio Lopez (who died in 1987) and his partner Juan Ramos. The more I explored, the more moved I was. Lopez made fashion illustration and his life a work of art. The exhibit displays numerous illustrations and paintings, along with photos and videos of him, his subjects, models, and friends. The exhibit is well researched, well organized, and well curated.
The permanent collection is pretty small, but Puerto Rican Pieta is well worth a visit. The look on the mother's face says it all--protection, love, endurance. I would visit again, especially if the short-term exhibits are of the calibre of the one I just saw.

Misleading, Total Waste

Because it's right beside the Museum of the City of New York, you might wander in here by accident thinking it has something to do with Hispanic or at any rate cultural life in the city.

It us actually a deliberate ripoff. The display is of quite ordinary modern art, and you can walk through in 10 minutes. Save your $9.
