you will find the trail beginning just off the Hana Maui Hotel parking lot. Approximately 15 minute steady upward walk on a clean manicured trail. View the entire town and harbor.
Sometimes there are cows on the path, they were friendly and moved aside with a bit of coaxing!

I will admit that I did not do the hike, but wanted to recount the story of Paul Fagan according to the tour driver. Paul Fagan is the person responsible for purchasing all the defunct sugar cane plantations in Hana and starting a cattle ranch, ultimately allowing many of the locals to stay in Hana, whereas much of the island moved west or to other islands in seek of new work.

Paul Fagan also founded the hotel in Hana and is responsible for much of the visitors and commerce on the east side of Maui.

The cross, which is made out of lava stone can been seen from very far away (see my pic) and is a memorial to the man who many believe was responsible for allowing Hana to remain a viable and now very happy place to live.

We were staying in Hana and made time to walk/ hike up to Fagan's Cross. The grounds are green and beautiful. There are amazing views all the way around. The stone cross is huge and inspiring. It's free and your get some good exercise.

Take the walk to the Cross, it will get your heart pumping, but not kill you. Great view, needs better signage. Free parking.

A 30 minute steep heart pounding stroll straight up the side of the mountain through the Hana Ranch will take you to a beautiful view at the top at Fagan's Cross.

You get a great view of the sun rising – assuming you are willing to get up at about 5 am for the walk up the hill. Trust me, it’s worth it. Access is through the hotel car park, and you use the pedestrian gate to the left of the (locked I believe) gate across the tarmac track. Then just follow the track, which takes you just passed the monument then looks back for the final few feet of ascent. You climb around 500 feet in all if you’re staying in Hana itself.

If you happen to be in Hana on Easter day I believe there is a sunrise service of Christian worship up there – and on that occasion the gate is open to allow vehicles up. Every other day of the year: you have to walk.

Do it!

I have walked up to the cross twice now and it takes me 18 mins from the gate in Travaasa's car park. It is quite steep in places but the track/road is paved all the way. The view from Fagan's Cross is absolutley wonderful and well worth the effort. You look down on the beautiful township of Hāna and her pretty Bay. The images are from both my walkes, the first for the sunset behind you and the second for the Sunrise service on Easter Sunday.

The walk is about 15-20 minutes up a fairly steep incline. Was a good way to squeeze in a little exercise for the day. Beautiful outlook, very peaceful. If you are staying at Travasa be sure to check it out.

I’ve seen the cross numerous times, always wanted to hike up but never got the chance until recently.

THE MAN:
The cross was constructed in 1962 by Takao Suda of Kihei, to honor Paul Fagan (1893-1960), a man whose hard work and drive put Hana on the world map with his efforts still felt till this day.

Mr. Fagan purchased the Hana Sugar Company in the 1930’s. After the sugar industry died, he cleared the land of the crop and brought over cattle from Molokai, creating the Hana Ranch in 1944.

Soon after, he acquired the San Francisco Seals professional baseball team who were part of the now defunct Pacific Coast League.

Seeing the tourist industry taking off on Oahu, he wanted a piece of that pie and opened the Ka’uiki Inn, Hana’s first hotel. The name later changed to Hotel Hana Maui and is now known as Travaasa Hana, still the only hotel in the area.

Mr. Fagan brought his San Francisco Seals team to Hana for training, along with national sports writers, who in turn publicized the town and his hotel to the world.

THE CROSS:
The hike up takes about 20 minutes or so, depending on your physical condition. The paved path starts out as a gradual incline but quickly turns challenging. You’ll see guava and mango trees along the way, along with cows and cow pies, so be careful where you step!

The area looks almost heiau-like (ancient Hawaiian temple) but isn’t one. An open and paved staging area greets you with the towering cross perched on a higher, alter-like platform flanked by tiki torches on either side and a smoothed lava rock floor below. The cross stands 30 feet high and is made out of numerous hand cut blocks of gray stone, stacked neatly like the Washington Monument. Views of Hana town, rolling hills of Haleakala and blue Pacific are second to none.

TIP:
Oddly there was no information posted about the cross at the site.

OVERALL:
Free and heart-healthy activity. Great views from Hana’s version of the skyscraper observatory.

Hiked up multiple times. Enjoyed the sunrise there. Quiet and peaceful, but strenous hike. Vegetation along the way is lovely.
